A Cultural Shift to ‘Pet Parenting’
The single biggest driver behind the rise of fresh pet food is a profound cultural shift known as ‘pet humanization’. In urban India, the dynamic has evolved from ‘pet keeping’ to ‘pet parenting’. A recent survey found that a majority of Indian pet owners,
as high as 57%, now consider their pets to be integral family members, with 16% viewing them as their own children. This emotional bond is particularly strong among millennials and Gen Z in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, who are often living in nuclear families and have higher disposable incomes. As people become more conscious of their own health and wellness, they are extending the same care and scrutiny to their pets' diets, demanding higher quality and more personalized options.
The Health Halo: Moving Beyond Kibble
For decades, processed dry kibble has been the default choice for its convenience and long shelf life. However, a growing number of pet parents are questioning its nutritional value. Concerns are rising about the high temperatures used to produce kibble, which can diminish nutrients, and the use of fillers, artificial preservatives, and powdered meat meals. Fresh food services counter this by using human-grade ingredients that are gently cooked to preserve nutritional integrity and eliminate pathogens. Proponents claim a visible difference within weeks, including improved digestion, higher energy levels, better nutrient absorption, and healthier skin and coats. The higher moisture content in fresh food, typically around 70-80% compared to 10% in kibble, also aids hydration, a critical factor in India's warm climate.
Convenience Meets Customisation
For busy urban professionals, the convenience of a subscription-based service that delivers perfectly portioned meals to their doorstep is a major draw. These services eliminate the time and effort of shopping for specific ingredients and cooking daily meals. But the appeal goes beyond simple convenience. The core offering is customisation. Startups in this space create meal plans tailored to a dog's specific needs, considering factors like breed, age, weight, activity level, and health conditions such as allergies or sensitivities. After an initial consultation, often online, the service calculates the precise caloric and nutritional requirements, delivering a level of personalization that off-the-shelf products cannot match. This tailored approach is a key selling point for owners dealing with picky eaters or dogs with specific health goals.
A Booming Market for Indian Startups
This rising demand has fueled a vibrant ecosystem of domestic startups, challenging the dominance of legacy international brands. Companies operating in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai are building direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands that resonate with modern pet parents. These startups often lead with a message of trust and transparency, emphasizing clean labels and locally sourced, human-grade ingredients. While the premium pet food market is still a small fraction of the overall pet food industry, it is the fastest-growing segment, expanding at over 20% annually. This growth is attracting investor attention, enabling these companies to expand their reach, refine their recipes, and make fresh, healthy food more accessible to pet owners across India's major urban centres.
