In AC 2-Tier and First Class, the total permissible limit is 100 kg. Sleeper Class passengers can carry a maximum of 80 kg, while Second Class has a ceiling of 70 kg. However, for passengers in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the maximum limit is the same as the free allowance—40 kg. This means you cannot book excess luggage for these classes online and must adhere to the 40 kg limit. There are also size restrictions: standard bags should not exceed 100cm x 60cm x 25cm, but for AC 3-Tier and Chair Car, a smaller size of 55cm x 45cm x 22.5cm applies.
How to Book Excess Luggage Online
The new online process, which began on July 31, 2026, is designed to be straightforward for passengers with confirmed tickets. You can access the facility through the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or via the IRCTC website while managing your booking. You will need to enter your journey details and declare the excess weight you are carrying. The system will display the applicable charges based on your luggage and route. After submitting the application, you must print the e-forwarding note. It is crucial to remember that while the booking process is initiated online, you still need to present your luggage at the station's parcel office for final weighing and payment before the journey.
Understanding the Charges and Penalties
Booking your excess luggage in advance is significantly cheaper than being caught with undeclared weight. The standard charge for pre-booked excess luggage is 1.5 times the normal luggage rate, with a minimum fee of ₹30. However, if a passenger is found with un-booked excess luggage during the journey, the penalty is severe: six times the normal luggage rate. For example, if the standard charge to book 40 kg of excess luggage is ₹109, the penalty for not booking it would be ₹654. This strict enforcement is intended to reduce overcrowding in compartments and ensure passenger convenience. Random checks will be conducted, so it is far more economical and stress-free to declare and book your extra bags online.
