For example, a special might be announced from Mysuru to Kannur on a specific date to cater to the outbound Onam traffic. But there may not be an equivalent special service announced from Kannur back to Mysuru a few days later. This strategy allows the railways to maximise the availability of coaches and staff to clear the heavy rush in one direction. The same rake (train) can then be used for a different high-demand route. While efficient for operations, it can leave travellers stranded if they assume a return service will be available.

Other significant routes with special bi-weekly and weekly services include Dr MGR Chennai Central to Kollam, Mangaluru Central to Chennai Egmore, and Thiruvananthapuram to Tambaram. Adding to the complexity of August travel, ongoing redevelopment work at Chennai Egmore station will cause temporary changes to several express train services between August 5 and August 20, 2026. Some trains that normally operate from Chennai Egmore will be short-terminated or will originate from Tambaram or Mambalam instead. For example, the Kollam-Chennai Egmore Ananthapuri Superfast Express will temporarily terminate at Tambaram. Passengers travelling to or from Chennai must verify the exact origin and destination stations for their trains during this period to avoid confusion and last-minute hassles.
