What Is Food Safety Connect?
Food Safety Connect is the official grievance redressal platform from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It is designed to be a one-stop solution for consumers to report any violations related to food safety. Think of it as a direct
line to the authorities responsible for ensuring the food on your plate is safe. Available as both a mobile app (for Android and iOS) and a web portal, it allows you to file detailed complaints, provide evidence, and perhaps most importantly, track the progress of the action taken. The system also lets you verify the FSSAI license or registration of any food business, adding a layer of transparency before you even make a purchase.
Why Your Complaint Is More Than Just a Gripe
Filing a complaint through this official channel does much more than a negative online review. While reviews inform other customers, a formal FSSAI complaint can trigger an actual inspection and regulatory action. FSSAI has actively encouraged citizens to become its ‘eyes and ears’, using the platform to report issues. Each report contributes to a larger database that helps authorities identify repeat offenders and problem areas, leading to a more robust food safety ecosystem for everyone. You can report a wide spectrum of issues, from expired products and unhygienic kitchens to misleading advertisements and incorrect labelling on packages.
Before You File: Gather Your Evidence
A well-supported complaint is an effective one. Before you log in, take a few moments to gather crucial information. The most powerful evidence you can provide is photographic or video. Snap clear pictures of the issue, whether it’s a foreign object in your food, a dirty kitchen, or an expired date on a package. Equally important is the proof of purchase, so keep the bill or invoice handy. For packaged goods, look for the 14-digit FSSAI license number, typically found on the label or packaging. Having this number makes your complaint highly specific and easier to route. While a bill is ideal, you can still report general issues like poor hygiene at an establishment without one.
Step-by-Step: How to Lodge Your Complaint
The process is designed to be straightforward. First, download the 'Food Safety Connect' app or visit the consumer grievance portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in). You will need to create an account or log in. Select the option to 'Lodge New Complaint'. The form will ask for details about the food business operator; fill in the name and address. If you have the FSSAI number, enter it. Next, you will choose the category of your complaint from a list that includes adulteration, poor hygiene, and misleading claims. Describe the incident clearly and concisely in the provided text box. This is where you upload your evidence—the photos, videos, and a copy of the bill you prepared earlier. After reviewing all the details, submit the form. The system will immediately generate a unique complaint ID.
From Submission to Resolution: Tracking Your Case
That unique complaint ID is your key to transparency. You can use this number on the same app or portal to monitor the status of your grievance. The 'Track Complaint' feature shows you exactly where your complaint is in the resolution process. Initially, the complaint is forwarded to the concerned food safety authority for verification and action. In some cases, it may be sent to the food business itself for an initial response. If you're not satisfied with the resolution provided by the business or if there's no response, the complaint is typically escalated to the respective state food authorities for further action, which can include an unannounced inspection of the premises.
