Indian Railways has revised the rules for preparing its first reservation chart. The first chart, which determines the initial confirmation status of passengers, will now be prepared at least 10 hours before the train's scheduled departure. This is a significant

A second and final chart is still prepared about 30 minutes before departure, which accommodates any last-minute cancellations or allocations. This two-chart system ensures maximum seat utilisation while providing an early, reliable status update to the majority of travellers.
The Old Way: A Race Against Time
Previously, the first reservation chart was prepared just four hours before a train's departure. This left passengers with unconfirmed tickets in a difficult position. A four-hour window is often insufficient to make alternative arrangements, especially for long-distance travel. Finding a seat on another train, booking a bus, or even considering a flight becomes a frantic, high-stress scramble. This often meant either paying exorbitant prices for last-minute alternatives or cancelling the trip altogether. The tight deadline created a bottleneck of uncertainty that affected millions of passengers.
