The Shift from Teen to Adult Account
OpenAI requires users to be at least 13 years old, and those between 13 and 17 must have parental permission to use its services. To cater to this younger audience, OpenAI has a “ChatGPT for Teens” experience. This mode is often enabled automatically
for accounts identified as belonging to a minor, either through self-declared age or OpenAI's own age-prediction systems. When a user turns 18, their account is scheduled to automatically transition from a teen account to a standard adult account. OpenAI notifies the user about a week before this change happens, giving them a heads-up that their user experience is about to change.
Safety Guardrails Are Removed
The most significant change is the removal of teen-specific safety protections. The teen experience is designed to be more restrictive, limiting exposure to content deemed inappropriate for minors, such as graphic violence, self-harm topics, and certain types of romantic or violent role-play. When the account transitions to an adult one, these enhanced protections are turned off by default. This aligns with OpenAI's stated principle of "treating adult users like adults," giving them more freedom but also more responsibility. While tools to address mental health crises remain for all users, the preemptive filtering becomes less aggressive. Adults who still prefer an added layer of filtering can manually enable a "Reduce sensitive content" feature in their settings, though this does not restore all the protections of the teen mode.
Parental Controls Are Severed
For teens whose accounts were linked to a parent or guardian, turning 18 severs that connection automatically. Parental controls, which allow a parent to manage certain settings, are removed entirely. The parent or guardian will no longer be able to manage settings for the account and will stop receiving any safety notifications that may have been in place. The new adult user gains full and sole control over all their account settings, from data controls to content preferences. OpenAI notifies both the teen and the linked parent before the transition occurs, so the change does not come as a surprise.
New Features and Different Rules
Graduating to an adult account can also unlock access to features that are restricted for minors. As OpenAI's policies evolve, it has signaled intentions to allow more mature content, such as erotica, for verified adult users. This is part of a broader industry trend where platforms are creating age-gated experiences rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. For the new adult user, this means the terms of service now apply to them directly, without the buffer of required parental consent. They become fully responsible for the content they generate and how they use the service, including complying with policies that prohibit using AI for decisions that have a legal or material impact on people, like in hiring or credit assessments.
What About Your Data?
The fundamental data collection practices of ChatGPT do not drastically change. OpenAI collects account information, the content of your prompts, and technical data like your IP address and device type, regardless of age. However, the legal framework around this data shifts. As a minor with parental consent, the legal agreement is tripartite. As an adult, the user is the sole party in the agreement with OpenAI regarding their data. It becomes more important than ever for the newly 18-year-old user to understand their data controls, including how to manage chat history, opt out of having their data used for model training, and delete their information if they choose to.
