Dubai, a city synonymous with superlative achievements, is adding another record-breaking attraction to its portfolio. Officials have announced plans for the world's first and longest 24-carat gold walkway, slated to open by the end of 2026.
A Path Paved with Gold
In a city
of architectural marvels, the latest project aims to offer a unique experience: the chance to walk on gold. According to recent announcements, the Dubai Gold District in Deira is preparing to open a walkway made of 24-carat gold. Rashid Al Harmoodi, a senior director at the district, confirmed the project would be the first of its kind and the longest in the world. While the exact length and the quantity of gold to be used remain under wraps, the walkway is expected to be a major tourist draw. The project is on a fast track, with officials targeting an opening within the next two months, before the close of 2026.
The New Dubai Gold District
This golden path is the centrepiece of the newly launched Dubai Gold District, which officially began operations in January 2026. Located in the historic Deira area, the district is a purpose-built destination designed to consolidate Dubai's status as a global hub for the precious metal. It brings together over 1,000 retailers, wholesale traders, bullion dealers, and investors in one location, dealing in gold, jewellery, luxury watches, and perfumes. The initiative appears to be succeeding, as the district has already reported a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery and luxury watch shops since the beginning of the year.
Blending Tradition and Tourism
The walkway is more than just a luxurious path; it's a strategic move to blend commerce with tourism. The project is situated within the broader Deira Enrichment Project, a large-scale urban redevelopment by developer Ithra Dubai. This initiative aims to rejuvenate Dubai's oldest trading hub while preserving its cultural heritage. The Gold Souk Extension, which opened in 2022, already upgraded the area with modern retail spaces, shaded pedestrian walkways, and better connectivity. The gold walkway is the next step in this evolution, designed to create a memorable experience that enhances Deira's appeal and reinforces Dubai's moniker as the 'City of Gold'.
Economic Shine and Future Plans
The project is expected to significantly boost visitor numbers to the area, benefiting the hundreds of businesses operating within the Gold District. By creating a unique attraction, Dubai hopes to draw more tourists and shoppers, further stimulating its vibrant gold market. Officials believe the walkway will support the district's continued expansion, with a projected 10% to 20% increase in companies relocating there over the next year. The announcement of the walkway was made as the district celebrated two new Guinness World Records for gold jewellery, highlighting the city's deep connection to the trade. Future plans also include establishing the largest gold and jewellery exhibition in the Middle East, cementing the district's role as a comprehensive global centre for the industry.
