Visas: Your First Step
Getting your documents in order is the first hurdle. For Indian passport holders, both countries have moved their processes online. For Georgia, most Indians will need to apply for an e-Visa via the official portal (evisa.gov.ge). The process is entirely
digital, costs around $20 plus a service fee, and typically takes about five to seven working days. However, if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from countries like the USA, UK, or any Schengen state, you can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 90 days. For Armenia, Indian citizens also generally require a visa. The easiest route is the e-Visa, which costs as little as ₹650 for a 21-day stay. A temporary exemption running until July 2026 allows Indians with valid residence permits from the US, EU, or certain Gulf countries to enter visa-free for up to 180 days. Visa on arrival is not an option for Indians in either country, so plan ahead.
Finding Affordable Flights
Flights will likely be your biggest single expense. There are no direct flights from India to either Yerevan (Armenia) or Tbilisi (Georgia), so a one-stop journey is standard. Airlines like Kuwait Airways, Air Arabia, and Azerbaijan Airlines often offer competitive fares from major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Round-trip tickets can range from ₹28,000 to ₹45,000. To get the best prices, book at least six to eight weeks in advance and consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of April-May or September-October. Using flight comparison tools will help you find the cheapest month and even the cheapest day to fly.
Overland Travel: Crossing from Armenia to Georgia
Traveling between the two countries is a classic backpacker experience and is very affordable. The most common method is by road. Shared minivans, known as 'marshrutkas', are the cheapest option. A marshrutka from Yerevan to Tbilisi takes about five to six hours, including the border crossing, and costs around $11-$26. These vans depart regularly from major bus stations like Kilikia in Yerevan. The Bagratashen-Sadakhlo border crossing is the main one used for this route and is open 24/7. While the journey is straightforward, be prepared for potential delays during peak summer weekends. An overnight train is also available, offering a more comfortable, though slower, way to cross the border while you sleep.
Accommodation on a Shoestring
Both Armenia and Georgia are fantastic for budget accommodation. In cities like Tbilisi and Yerevan, you can find hostel dorm beds for ₹800–₹1,500 per night. These are great places to meet other travelers. Guesthouses run by local families are another excellent and affordable option, often providing a more authentic experience. A private room in a guesthouse can cost between ₹1,800 to ₹3,500. Look for places slightly outside the main tourist-heavy Old Town areas to find even better deals. For example, a studio apartment in Tbilisi can be rented for under 1000 GEL per month if you are planning a longer stay.
Eating Well for Less
One of the best parts of traveling here is the food, which is delicious, hearty, and cheap. A full meal at a local restaurant in Georgia, including classics like khinkali (dumplings) and khachapuri (cheese bread), can cost as little as ₹300–₹600. In Armenia, you can find a satisfying meal at a budget restaurant for under $12. To save money, eat where the locals do and avoid the tourist traps on main streets, where prices can be 30-50% higher for the same food. Shopping at local markets for fresh produce, bread, and cheese is another great way to eat cheaply and well.
Affordable In-City and Country Transport
Getting around within the cities is incredibly cheap. The Tbilisi metro costs just 1 GEL (about ₹30) per ride, with free transfers within 90 minutes. In Yerevan, a metro ride is similarly priced at around ₹25-₹40. Ride-sharing apps like Bolt and Yandex are widely used and offer very low-cost taxi rides across the city, often costing just ₹150–₹600 for a trip. For exploring the countryside, marshrutkas are the go-to for intercity travel, connecting major towns and tourist sites for a fraction of the cost of a private tour. Day tours from Yerevan to popular sites like Garni and Geghard can be found for ₹2,000 to ₹4,000.
