The Golden North: Rajasthan, Delhi & Agra
The northern plains, including the iconic Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), welcome travellers with some of the most pleasant weather of the year. The intense summer heat is a distant memory, replaced by warm, sunny days and comfortably cool
evenings. Expect daytime temperatures to hover around 30-34°C with minimal rainfall. This makes it ideal for exploring Rajasthan's majestic forts in cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur without the scorching heat. While early October can sometimes retain a bit of warmth, especially in desert areas like Jaisalmer, the humidity drops significantly, making sightseeing a delight. Pack light cottons for the day and a light jacket or shawl for the cooler nights.
The Majestic Himalayas: Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand
For those seeking mountain vistas, October is a prime month to head to the Himalayan states. The monsoon clouds have cleared, revealing stunning, unobstructed views of the snow-capped peaks. The air is fresh and crisp, though it gets progressively colder as the month wears on. In hill stations like Shimla, Mussoorie, and Rishikesh, daytime temperatures are mild, often in the mid-20s Celsius, but nights can be chilly. While most of the month is dry, a western disturbance could bring some rain and gusty winds, particularly from October 6th onwards, so it's wise to check local forecasts. Your packing list should include layers: T-shirts for sunny afternoons, supplemented by sweaters, a warm jacket, and even a cap for the cold evenings and mornings.
The Lush South: Kerala & Karnataka
South India in October is a picture of post-monsoon splendour. The landscape is exceptionally green, waterfalls are in full flow, and the backwaters of Kerala are serene. States like Kerala and Karnataka will be warm and comfortable, with daytime temperatures averaging around 29°C. While the heavy southwest monsoon has ended, you might still encounter occasional showers, but they are typically short-lived and leave the air feeling fresh. This is an excellent time for exploring the tea gardens of Munnar or the coffee plantations of Coorg, where temperatures can range from 16°C to 27°C. However, be aware that the northeast monsoon can begin to affect Tamil Nadu towards the end of the month, bringing more rain to that specific region.
The Coastal West: Goa & Mumbai
October marks the beginning of the tourist season in Goa for good reason. The intense monsoon rains recede, and while the month might start with a few showers, it gets progressively drier and sunnier. The sea becomes calm again, and beach shacks start to reopen for business. Temperatures are warm, typically ranging from 25°C at night to highs of 32°C during the day. The humidity, while still present, is less oppressive than in previous months. In Mumbai, the weather is similarly pleasant as the city dries out after the monsoon. Lightweight clothing is a must, but packing a light raincoat or umbrella for the occasional, unexpected shower in early October is a sensible precaution.
The Vibrant East: West Bengal & The Northeast
In Eastern India, October brings mild temperatures and receding rains. Kolkata is pleasantly warm and dry, making it a great time to explore the city's culture, especially with festivals like Durga Puja often falling in this period. The hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim offer stunning views with autumn colours beginning to appear. Further into the Northeast, in states like Meghalaya, the weather is ideal for exploring its famous living root bridges, caves, and waterfalls, with daytime temperatures in Shillong hovering between 15°C and 24°C. It’s a fantastic window to visit after the heavy rains but before the winter chill sets in. Some national parks, like Kaziranga in Assam, also begin to reopen this month.
