What is the New Sleeper Link?
The 'sleeper link' mentioned in discussions is the proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a modern, faster alternative to conventional overnight trains. This service is part of a broader plan by Indian Railways to enhance long-distance travel with trains designed
for comfort and speed. The specific service in question is the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper, which has been routed via the Pune-Solapur corridor. Unlike the chair-car Vande Bharat trains currently in operation, these sleeper versions are built for overnight journeys, featuring 16 coaches with a mix of First, Second, and Third AC berths, accommodating around 823 passengers. The primary goal is to significantly reduce travel time between major economic hubs while offering a more comfortable experience.
The Strategic Pune-Solapur Route
The Railway Board has finalised the route for the Mumbai-Bengaluru sleeper service to run through Kalaburagi, Solapur, and Pune. This decision was made after determining that the alternative alignment via Miraj was not suitable for the planned operating speed of 130 kmph. The route will connect key cities including Mumbai, Kalyan, Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal, Anantapur, and Bengaluru. For passengers in Pune and Solapur, this provides a direct, high-speed overnight connection to both Mumbai and the tech hub of Bengaluru. The choice of the Solapur route has, however, sparked some debate, with passenger groups from Western Maharashtra advocating for a route via Miraj to benefit more districts.
A Major Cut in Travel Time
The most significant benefit of this new service is the drastic reduction in travel duration. The journey between Pune and Bengaluru is expected to be cut down to about 12 to 15 hours, a substantial improvement from the 18 hours or more it currently takes on existing trains like the Udyan Express. The full Mumbai-Bengaluru journey is estimated to take around 16 to 18 hours, compared to the current 22 hours. Speed trials at up to 130 kmph were planned for the corridor, underscoring the project's focus on speed. This efficiency is expected to be a major draw for business travellers, IT professionals, and tourists travelling between these vital economic centres.
Current Status and What to Expect
The project is in an advanced stage of planning, with the Railway Board having approved the service and its route. Union Minister of State for Railways, V. Somanna, has even suggested a possible launch date of November 1, 2026. However, as of late October 2026, Indian Railways has not officially released the final timetable, confirmed all station halts, or announced ticket prices and reservation dates. Indicative timetables suggest a train departing Mumbai around 10:30 p.m. would reach Pune at approximately 1:50 a.m. before proceeding towards Bengaluru. While two trainsets have already arrived in Bengaluru for the service, passengers are advised to wait for official announcements for confirmed details.
Bolstering Regional Infrastructure
This Vande Bharat sleeper is part of a larger push to upgrade railway infrastructure in Maharashtra. The Pune-Solapur-Wadi corridor is already undergoing significant expansion, with work beginning on third and fourth railway lines. This Rs. 16,000-crore project aims to increase train speeds to 160 kmph and segregate passenger and freight traffic, easing congestion. Currently, the double-line route handles over 100 passenger trains and 60 freight trains daily, leading to frequent delays. The addition of new tracks will create the capacity needed for high-speed services like the Vande Bharat Sleeper to operate efficiently, ensuring that the new link is not just a proposal but a sustainable, long-term upgrade to the region's transport network.
