technology and R&D to finance and product engineering. Initially, they were set up in India for cost savings, but that’s an old story. Today, they have evolved from back-office hubs into strategic centres of innovation and leadership that shape global business. They are where new products are designed, AI solutions are built, and global strategies are driven from.
The Great Indian GCC Rush
The growth has been nothing short of explosive. As of 2026, India hosts over 2,100 GCCs employing more than 2.3 million professionals and generating nearly $100 billion in annual revenue. More than half of the world's top companies have a GCC in India. This rush is driven by a powerful combination of factors: access to a massive talent pool, a mature digital infrastructure, and a strategic shift where companies now see their India centres as engines for innovation, not just cost arbitrage. The government has set a target of supporting 5,000 GCCs by 2030, a goal seen as realistic and achievable.
The Paradox of the Talent Challenge
This brings us to the central puzzle. India produces around 1.5 million engineering graduates each year. On paper, the talent supply seems endless. Yet, GCCs are struggling to hire. The problem isn't a lack of engineers; it's a structural mismatch between the skills graduates have and what companies desperately need. Reports suggest that only 25-30% of engineering graduates are considered job-ready for the complex demands of a modern GCC. The real bottleneck is in niche, future-ready skills. There's a fierce war for talent with expertise in AI/ML, data science, cloud engineering, and cybersecurity. The demand for AI specialists, for example, has surged over 300% since 2024, creating a significant skills deficit.
It's a Quality, Not Quantity, Game
The challenge is particularly acute for experienced roles. It takes, on average, more than 45 days to fill a critical role at a GCC. This isn't just about technical skills. As GCCs take on global leadership mandates, there is also a shortage of professionals who combine deep industry knowledge with advanced tech capabilities and strategic thinking. Companies are not just competing with each other; they are also losing senior engineers to well-funded startups offering lucrative stock options. This intense competition is driving up salaries and attrition rates, with the average tenure for young professionals dropping below two years, leading to a high replacement hiring rate.
How Companies Are Fighting Back
GCCs are realizing they cannot simply hire their way out of this problem. The focus is shifting from pure acquisition to building talent from within. Many are investing heavily in reskilling and upskilling their existing workforce to meet future demands, with some reports showing over 70% of GCCs need to retrain a significant portion of their employees. Companies are launching internal training academies, partnering with universities to shape curriculum, and deploying 'hire-train-deploy' models to make graduates job-ready. They are also expanding into Tier-2 cities like Jaipur and Coimbatore to tap into fresh talent pools beyond the hyper-competitive markets of Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Another crucial strategy is improving their employer brand to communicate the unique career paths and global impact they offer, a factor many engineers are still unaware of.
