Know the All-Important Deadline
The most crucial rule is to file on time. For most individual taxpayers, including salaried employees and pensioners who are not subject to a tax audit (filing ITR-1 or ITR-2), the due date to file their return for the Financial Year 2025-26 is July 31,
2026. Missing this deadline has consequences, including a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000. For those with income below ₹5 lakh, the penalty is capped at ₹1,000. Beyond the penalty, late filing means you cannot carry forward certain losses and may face delays in receiving any refunds. You will also be liable to pay interest at 1% per month on any unpaid tax liability.
New Tax Regime vs. Old: Make the Right Choice
For the Assessment Year 2026-27, the New Tax Regime is the default option. It offers lower tax rates across revised slabs but eliminates most of the popular deductions like those under Section 80C and 80D. However, it does provide a standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salaried individuals. The Old Tax Regime allows you to claim numerous exemptions and deductions, which can significantly lower your taxable income if you have made eligible investments. Individuals without business income can choose their preferred regime each year directly in their ITR form. It is vital to calculate your tax liability under both regimes to see which is more beneficial for your financial situation.
Choosing the Correct ITR Form
Using the wrong ITR form is a common error that can lead to your return being classified as 'defective'. For AY 2026-27, there have been some taxpayer-friendly changes. ITR-1 (Sahaj), for salaried individuals, can now be used even if you have income from up to two house properties. Previously, this required the more complex ITR-2. ITR-2 is for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who have income sources like capital gains but do not have income from a business or profession. ITR-3 is for individuals with income from a business or profession, while ITR-4 (Sugam) is for those opting for the presumptive taxation scheme.
Essential Documents to Gather
Being prepared with the right documents is half the battle won. Before you begin, ensure you have your PAN card, Aadhaar card (which must be linked to your PAN), and bank account statements. Salaried employees need their Form 16 from their employer. Crucially, you must also download and review your Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) from the e-filing portal. These documents provide a consolidated view of taxes paid and financial transactions reported to the tax department. Cross-verifying these with your own records is essential to avoid mismatches and potential notices.
Notable Changes in ITR Forms for 2026
The ITR forms for AY 2026-27 have introduced several new reporting requirements to enhance transparency. There is now more detailed reporting required for capital gains, including specific disclosures for transactions involving Futures and Options (F&O). Taxpayers who are partners in a firm will also need to provide additional details. Furthermore, there is a new field to disclose any disallowance of interest payments made to MSMEs under Section 43B(h), reinforcing compliance for businesses. While these changes add layers of detail, the pre-filled data on the portal has also been improved to assist taxpayers.
Don't Forget to Verify Your Return
Simply filing your ITR is not the final step. Your return is considered invalid until it is verified. The tax department will only process your return and issue any applicable refund after verification is complete. You have 30 days from the date of filing to complete this crucial step. The quickest and most common method is e-verification through an Aadhaar-linked OTP. Other online methods include using your net banking account, a pre-validated bank or demat account to generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC), or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). If you cannot e-verify, you must print, sign, and send a physical copy of the ITR-V acknowledgement to the CPC in Bengaluru via speed post.
