Beyond the Monsoon Gamble
Indian agriculture is defined by its relationship with water. With nearly half of the country's sown area being rainfed, the timing and intensity of the monsoon can make or break a farmer's year, impacting national food production. However, climate change
is making rainfall patterns more erratic — leading to intense downpours and prolonged droughts, sometimes in the same season. This is where the concept of 'farm resilience' becomes critical. It’s a farm’s capacity to withstand and recover from these shocks. While we can't control the weather, we can change how our land responds to it. The key lies in shifting focus from just the quantity of rain received to the quality of the soil that receives it.
The Soil as a Living Sponge
Think of healthy soil as a giant, living sponge. Its ability to absorb and hold water depends on its structure and, most importantly, its organic matter content. Soil rich in organic matter—decaying plant and animal material—has a better structure, with more pore spaces that can soak up rainwater instead of letting it run off. This prevents soil erosion during heavy rains and reduces the risk of flash floods. That stored water then becomes a vital reservoir for crops, allowing them to thrive even during dry spells. In fact, just a 1% increase in soil organic matter can help an acre of land hold over 75,000 additional litres of water. This simple fact is revolutionary, turning the soil itself into a natural form of water conservation and drought insurance.
When the Sponge Fails
Conversely, degraded soil loses this sponge-like quality. Years of intensive tillage, overuse of chemical fertilisers, and lack of organic inputs can lead to compacted, lifeless soil. This 'dead' soil can't absorb water effectively. During heavy monsoons, water sheets off the surface, carrying away precious topsoil and causing floods downstream. Then, when the sun beats down, the land dries out quickly, leaving crops thirsty and vulnerable to drought. Farmers become more dependent on irrigation, straining already scarce groundwater resources. This vicious cycle of flood and drought, driven by poor soil health, erodes farm profitability, deepens farmer debt, and threatens the stability of our food supply.
Rebuilding India's Farm Foundation
The good news is that soil health can be restored. Farmers across India are adopting regenerative agriculture techniques that turn depleted land back into a fertile sponge. Practices like no-till farming avoid disturbing the soil structure, improving water infiltration. Planting cover crops between cash crops protects the soil from erosion and adds organic matter when they decompose. Integrating organic inputs like compost and manure revitalises the soil's microbial life and boosts its water-holding capacity. These methods not only make farms more resilient to climate extremes but can also reduce the need for expensive chemical fertilisers, lowering costs for farmers. Government initiatives like the Soil Health Card Scheme and the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) are also promoting these sustainable practices, aiming to build a more secure foundation for Indian agriculture.
