is ideal as the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear. It’s a classic choice for families and groups of friends looking for a lively atmosphere without spending a fortune. Getting there on a budget is simple. Several daily trains run from Howrah Junction to Digha, with the journey taking about three to four hours and tickets being very pocket-friendly. Alternatively, state-run and private buses depart frequently from Esplanade, offering another cheap travel option. For accommodation, New Digha has a vast number of budget hotels and guesthouses a short walk from the sea. Booking in advance is wise, but you can often find good deals on the spot, especially on weekdays. Low-cost activities include morning walks on the beach, visiting the Digha Science Centre, and exploring the nearby Shankarpur beach.
Mandarmani & Tajpur: Drive-in Beach and Serenity

Bakkhali & Henry's Island: A Quiet Nature Retreat
For those seeking true tranquility and a break from the crowds, Bakkhali and the nearby Henry’s Island are the perfect destinations. Situated in the South 24 Parganas, this area is part of the Sundarbans delta and offers a unique mix of quiet beaches and mangrove forests. It’s an ideal escape for nature lovers, solo travellers, and couples. The post-monsoon period from October onwards is the best time to visit, with calm seas and pleasant weather. Getting to Bakkhali involves either a bus journey from Esplanade or a train from Sealdah to Namkhana, followed by a short ferry and bus ride. However, a new bridge over the Hatania-Doania river has made the road journey by car much faster and more convenient. Budget hotels and lodges are available in Bakkhali town. From there, you can hire a local van or toto to explore Henry's Island, known for its watchtower overlooking the mangrove canopy, the serene Kiran beach, and the government-run fisheries. It’s a place to unwind, watch birds, and enjoy the pristine natural beauty.
Shankarpur: The Fishermen’s Cove
Once a quiet fishing harbour, Shankarpur has evolved into a peaceful beach destination, perfect for those who want to avoid the commercial bustle of Digha, which is just 14 km away. It offers a pristine and less crowded environment, making it ideal for a relaxing weekend. The main draw here is watching the fishing boats come ashore in the morning and evening, a truly authentic coastal experience. To get there, you can take a bus to Digha and then a short taxi or auto ride to Shankarpur. Accommodation is generally affordable, with a mix of hotels and resorts that cater to different budgets. Besides relaxing on the beach, you can visit the Shankarpur fishing harbour to see the bustling trade or take day trips to the nearby beaches of Tajpur and Mandarmani.
