Skin cycling is a structured, four-night skincare routine that involves rotating your active ingredients to give your skin time to recover. Popularised by New York-based dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, the method is designed to deliver the benefits of
powerful ingredients like exfoliants and retinoids without the irritation that can come from overuse. The philosophy is simple: work smarter, not harder. Instead of layering on multiple potent products every night, you alternate between treatment nights and recovery nights. This approach helps protect and repair your skin's natural barrier, leading to healthier, more balanced skin in the long run.
The Classic Four-Night Cycle
The standard skin cycling routine is easy to remember and implement. It focuses on your nighttime routine, while your morning routine of cleansing, moisturising, and applying sunscreen should remain consistent. Here's the breakdown: Night 1: Exfoliation. After cleansing, apply a chemical exfoliant. These products use acids—like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)—to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve skin texture. Dermatologists often prefer these over physical scrubs, which can be abrasive. Follow up with a simple moisturiser. Night 2: Retinoid. On the second night, it’s time for a retinoid. This family of Vitamin A derivatives is celebrated for its ability to accelerate cell turnover, boost collagen, and improve the appearance of fine lines and acne. If you're new to retinoids or have sensitive skin, you can apply a layer of moisturiser before the retinoid to act as a buffer. Nights 3 & 4: Recovery. These nights are all about letting your skin heal. Skip the active ingredients entirely and focus on hydration and repair. After cleansing, apply nourishing moisturisers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides to help rebuild your skin's barrier. Once the four nights are complete, you simply start the cycle over again.
The Benefits of a Balanced Approach
One of the main advantages of skin cycling is a significant reduction in irritation, redness, and dryness. By giving your skin dedicated recovery nights, you prevent the overuse of strong actives that can damage the skin barrier. This intentional rest period allows your skin to repair itself, which ultimately makes your active ingredients more effective when you do use them. Customising Your Cycle
While the four-night cycle is a great starting point, the beauty of skin cycling is its flexibility. You can and should adjust the routine based on your skin type and concerns. If you have very sensitive or dry skin, you might want to add an extra recovery night, making it a five-night cycle. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, you might find that you can eventually shorten the cycle to three nights (one exfoliation, one retinoid, one recovery) once your skin has adapted. For acne-prone skin, using a BHA like salicylic acid on your exfoliation night can be particularly effective for keeping pores clear. The key is to listen to your skin and adjust accordingly.
