The New Reality of Lounge Access
Not long ago, complimentary airport lounge access was a common perk, offered even on basic, lifetime-free credit cards. It was a simple transaction: show your card, pay a nominal fee of ₹2, and enter. Today, the landscape is dramatically different. Major
banks across India, including HDFC, ICICI, and Axis Bank, have moved to a “spend-linked” model. This means your free access is no longer guaranteed. Instead, it has become a conditional privilege, one that you must earn through your spending habits. The most significant change is the introduction of minimum spending thresholds. To unlock lounge visits for a particular quarter, you must now spend a pre-defined amount in the preceding quarter. For many popular cards, this can range from ₹35,000 to ₹75,000 in a three-month period. Fail to meet this target, and your card will likely be declined at the lounge entrance, even if it previously offered the benefit.
Why the Rules Have Tightened
Banks and card issuers are not making these changes without reason. The primary driver is cost. With a surge in air travel post-pandemic, lounges have become increasingly crowded. Each time a cardholder entered a lounge, the issuing bank paid the lounge operator a fee, which could be anywhere from ₹200 to over ₹1,000 per visit. As more people used this perk, the bill for banks skyrocketed. They realised they were spending a significant amount of money on customers who may not have been otherwise profitable. By linking lounge access to spending, banks can ensure this expensive perk is reserved for customers who actively use their cards for retail purchases, thus generating revenue for the bank and justifying the cost. This move also helps premium cards feel more exclusive, encouraging customers to upgrade for more seamless benefits.
Game Plan: Know Your Card's Policy
Your first and most crucial step is to stop assuming and start verifying. The lounge access rules advertised when you first got your card are likely outdated. Visit your bank's website, log into the net banking portal, or check the mobile app for the most current terms and conditions associated with your specific credit card. Look for a section on lounge access and find the fine print on quarterly spending requirements. Some banks, like HDFC, now require users to generate lounge vouchers through their app after meeting the spending criteria, adding an extra step to the process. Being aware of the exact spending target and the tracking period (e.g., January-March for access in April-June) is non-negotiable.
Strategy: Focus Your Spends
If lounge access is important to you, you may need to be more strategic with your card usage. Instead of spreading your monthly expenses across multiple cards, consider consolidating them onto the one card you wish to use for lounge access. This will help you hit the quarterly spending milestone more easily. If you have an entry-level card with a lower spending threshold, make it your primary card for all your utility bills, online shopping, and grocery runs. Track your progress throughout the quarter to ensure you meet the goal. Remember that some transactions, like wallet loads or rent payments, may not count towards the spending target for some banks, so read the terms carefully.
Explore the RuPay Network
The RuPay network presents a mixed but interesting picture. While complimentary access was discontinued for RuPay Platinum debit cards in April 2026, some RuPay Select credit cards still offer lounge benefits, often with their own set of conditions. For instance, a RuPay Select card might offer two complimentary domestic visits per quarter. Cards like the ICICI Coral RuPay offer access but still require a quarterly spend. It's worth exploring the different RuPay credit cards on offer, as they sometimes provide a more straightforward path to lounge access than their Visa or Mastercard counterparts, especially for domestic travel.
Look for a Niche Card
While major banks have tightened rules, some players are using lounge access to attract customers. There are still a few cards, including some lifetime-free options, that offer lounge access with more lenient conditions. For example, the Scapia Federal Bank card has been noted to offer unlimited domestic lounge access simply by spending at least ₹5,000 in a month. Similarly, co-branded travel cards like the ixigo AU Credit Card offer a generous number of lounge visits, though they are also tied to spending milestones. Researching these niche cards can uncover a product that perfectly fits your travel frequency and spending patterns without requiring a huge financial commitment.
