2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
No list of visually stunning space films is complete without Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece. In an era long before CGI, Kubrick and his team pioneered effects that still look astounding today. They built a massive, 38-foot rotating centrifuge set to simulate artificial gravity, allowing actors to seemingly walk up walls. First Man (2018)
Where other films on this list go for cosmic grandeur, Damien Chazelle's 'First Man' opts for a visceral, claustrophobic intensity. The film puts you directly inside the cockpit with Neil Armstrong, using shaky, documentary-style camerawork and a tight, personal perspective. To achieve this in-camera, the production used a massive, wrap-around LED screen which projected the space environments outside the capsule windows, creating realistic lighting and reflections on the actors' faces and visors. Then, for the moon landing itself, Chazelle switches from grainy 16mm film to crystal-clear full-frame IMAX. This sudden expansion of the screen and boost in clarity makes the audience feel as if they are stepping out onto the lunar surface right alongside Armstrong, creating a moment of pure cinematic awe.
