The World's First 24-Carat Gold Walkway
Dubai is adding a glittering new attraction to its extensive list of world-firsts: a walkway made of 24-carat gold. This ambitious project, located in the Deira district, is the centerpiece of a major initiative to rebrand and revitalise the area, now
known as the Dubai Gold District. According to officials, this 'golden path' will be the longest of its kind in the world and is set to open before the end of 2026, with some suggesting it could be ready within the next two months. While the exact length and construction details remain under wraps, the announcement has already generated significant buzz. The plan is to offer residents and tourists a unique opportunity to literally stroll along a path of pure gold, creating an unforgettable experience.
Reimagining a Historic Hub
The new walkway is part of the broader Deira Enrichment Project, a large-scale development by Ithra Dubai aimed at rejuvenating one of the city's oldest and most culturally significant trading hubs. The initiative seeks to preserve the area's heritage while introducing modern infrastructure. The Dubai Gold District itself, launched in January 2026, consolidates the area's commercial power, bringing together over 1,000 retailers dealing in gold, jewellery, bullion, and perfumes. The goal is to create a comprehensive destination that seamlessly blends trade, retail, and tourism. This isn't just about a single shiny street; it's about upgrading the entire visitor experience with state-of-the-art facilities, shaded walkways, and better connectivity, all while maintaining the traditional charm of the souk.
The Strategy Behind the Sparkle
This golden initiative is a calculated move to reinforce Dubai’s status as a global leader in the gold trade and a top-tier tourist destination. The UAE is already the world's second-largest physical gold trading destination, and this project aims to cement that position. Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), noted that gold is 'deeply woven into the cultural and commercial fabric of Dubai'. The new district and its golden walkway are designed to celebrate this legacy while reimagining it for a new era of tourism focused on creativity and sustainability. By creating such a headline-grabbing attraction, Dubai aims to draw international visitors, spur investment, and enhance its reputation as a city of innovation.
More Than Just a Photo Opportunity
While the golden walkway will undoubtedly be a major draw for sightseers, officials see it as a catalyst for deeper engagement. The project is intended to be the focal point for a range of new experiences within the Gold District. Rashid Al Harmoudi, Senior Director of the Commercial Sector at Dubai Gold District, has highlighted plans for a major gold and jewellery exhibition, which aims to be the largest in the Middle East. The development is already seeing growth, with a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery and luxury watch shops since the start of 2026. The integration of hotels, residences, and improved transport links aims to transform the district from a place to simply buy gold into a vibrant community where visitors can stay, explore, and immerse themselves in the industry.
A Golden Itinerary for Indian Travellers
For Indian tourists, who have a deep cultural and financial connection to gold, this development is particularly appealing. The announcement of the walkway was strategically made alongside an event celebrating a Guinness World Record for the world's heaviest pair of gold jhumka earrings, a traditional Indian design, created by Joyalukkas Jewellery. This highlights the city's focus on catering to its significant Indian visitor and expatriate population. The revitalised district will offer a more comfortable and engaging shopping experience, combining the thrill of the traditional souk with modern amenities. Visitors will be able to pair a walk on the golden path with a traditional 'abra' boat ride on the creek and visits to the nearby spice and perfume souks, creating a rich cultural itinerary.
