Start With Your Story, Not the AI
Before you open any AI tool, open a blank document and write down your own story. AI should be your editor, not your author. Start by listing your roles, responsibilities, and most importantly, your key achievements. What projects are you proud of? What problems
did you solve? What was the measurable impact of your work? This raw material is the foundation of an authentic CV. An AI can polish a sentence, but it cannot invent your unique career journey or the passion behind it. By starting with your own draft, you ensure the final product is rooted in your real experiences, preventing the generic phrasing that recruiters can easily spot.
Use AI as a Keyword Strategist
One of AI’s biggest strengths is its ability to analyse job descriptions and identify the crucial keywords and skills that Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are programmed to find. Instead of asking it to write your CV from scratch, copy and paste the job description you are targeting. Ask the AI to extract the top 10 most important skills and keywords from the text. Then, review your own draft and see where you can naturally integrate these terms. This approach helps you pass the initial automated screening without sacrificing your own voice. The goal is to align your language with the employer's, not to adopt a robotic tone.
Quantify Everything You Can
AI-generated text often produces vague statements like “improved team performance” or “led a successful project.” These phrases lack impact because they are not specific. Your authenticity shines through in the details. Go through every bullet point generated or refined by AI and ask yourself: “By how much?” or “How many?” Instead of “Managed social media accounts,” write “Grew Instagram followers by 40% in six months by implementing a new content strategy.” Instead of “Assisted with project management,” write “Coordinated timelines across three teams to deliver the project 15% under budget.” Numbers are your most powerful tool for demonstrating real-world impact and making your experience feel tangible and credible.
Rewrite the Professional Summary Yourself
The professional summary at the top of your CV is the first thing a human recruiter will read. It’s your best chance to inject personality. While an AI can generate a competent summary, it often relies on overused buzzwords like “results-driven professional” or “proven track record.” Scrap the AI-generated version and write this section in your own words. Concisely state who you are, what you are passionate about, and what unique value you bring. This is where you can show genuine enthusiasm for the role or industry, something an algorithm cannot fake. It bridges the gap between your skills and your personality, telling the recruiter who you are, not just what you can do.
Perform a Final 'Human-Voice' Edit
Once you have your AI-assisted draft, your final step is to read it aloud. Does it sound like you? Would you use these words in a professional conversation? Cut any jargon or overly formal phrases that feel unnatural. Check for repetition; AI can sometimes use the same sentence structure or action verbs repeatedly. This final, human-led proofread is crucial. It's not just about catching typos; it's about ensuring the tone, voice, and spirit of the CV are a true representation of you. A resume should feel like a confident handshake, not a printout from a machine.
