Dayara Bugyal, Uttarakhand
Often hailed as one of India's most beautiful alpine meadows, Dayara Bugyal in Uttarakhand is a premier destination for a snowy camping adventure. Spanning 28 square kilometres, this vast expanse of rolling meadows transforms into a pristine snowfield
from late December through February. The trek to Dayara is considered beginner-friendly, making it an accessible yet thrilling introduction to high-altitude snow trekking. The trail winds through enchanting forests of oak and rhododendron before opening up to the breathtaking meadow. Campsites like Gui and Chilapada offer spectacular views of Himalayan peaks like Gangotri I, II, III, and Bandarpoonch. While daytime temperatures are manageable, nights can be frigid, often dropping well below zero, so insulated tents and proper winter gear are essential. The experience of camping on the soft, grassy terrain covered in a thick blanket of snow is truly unforgettable.
Gorson Bugyal, Uttarakhand
Located near the popular ski destination of Auli, Gorson Bugyal is another gem in the Garhwal Himalayas. This meadow, sitting at an average elevation of 3,519 metres, is surrounded by dense forests of oak, deodar, and pine. During winter, from December to February, the entire meadow is blanketed in deep snow, creating a surreal white wonderland. The trek to Gorson is relatively easy, starting from Auli and taking you through a well-marked path with stunning views of major peaks like Nanda Devi. Camping is possible with the right permissions, allowing you to witness incredible sunrises and sunsets over the snow-clad peaks. The proximity to Auli means you can combine your camping trip with skiing, but the true highlight is the peaceful solitude of the meadow itself, especially when camping under a star-filled winter sky.
Sethan Valley, Himachal Pradesh
For a different flavour of snow camping, the quaint hamlet of Sethan, perched high above Manali, is an exceptional choice. This Buddhist village becomes a snow-covered paradise in winter, offering magical landscapes that feel almost otherworldly. From December to February, heavy snowfall transforms Sethan into a hub for activities like skiing, snowboarding, and, most importantly, camping. The valley provides a unique experience of staying in igloos, a concept that has gained popularity in recent years, offering a cosy shelter amidst the snow. The drive itself is picturesque, and campsites offer panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range. Camping here is less about a long trek and more about immersing yourself in a snowy environment, making it perfect for those who want the high-altitude snow experience with easier access.
Ali Bedni Bugyal, Uttarakhand
Considered by many trekkers to be one of the most perfectly landscaped meadows in the country, the combined expanse of Ali and Bedni Bugyal is breathtaking. These connected high-altitude grasslands in the Chamoli district offer flawless views of giants like Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. While the green meadows of summer and autumn are famous, a winter trek between December and March offers a more challenging, snow-laden adventure for the well-prepared. The trail passes through dense forests of oak and pine, ascending to the serene meadows which can be covered in snow. Due to environmental concerns, camping directly on the bugyal might be restricted in peak winter, with trekkers often staying in nearby settlements or designated lower campsites, but the experience of trekking through this pristine, snowy landscape is a reward in itself.
Kuari Pass Trail, Uttarakhand

Trekkers pass through rolling meadows that offer fantastic, clear views of the Nanda Devi massif, Kamet, and other formidable peaks. A winter trek here means navigating snowy trails and camping in sub-zero temperatures, an adventure suited for those with some prior trekking experience. The gentle, undulating nature of the forest sections allows you to truly soak in the serene, snow-covered environment, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.
