Start with Serving Size and Protein Content
Before you look at anything else, find the serving size and the amount of protein per serving. Brands can manipulate the scoop size to make their protein content seem higher. A good quality protein powder should offer 20-30 grams of protein per serving. A quick
way to check quality is to calculate the protein density: divide the grams of protein by the serving size in grams. A solid product will be 70-80% protein by weight. If a large 40-gram scoop only provides 20 grams of protein, you are paying for a lot of non-protein filler.
Identify the Protein Source
The ingredients are listed by weight, so the first few items make up the bulk of the product. The primary ingredient should be a protein source, not a sugar or filler. Common protein types include whey, casein, soy, pea, and rice. Whey protein is the most popular and comes in three main forms: Concentrate (WPC), Isolate (WPI), and Hydrolysate (WPH). Concentrate is the least processed, containing 70-80% protein with some fats and carbs. Isolate is further filtered to contain 90% or more protein, with very little lactose, making it ideal for those who are sensitive to dairy. Hydrolysate is a pre-digested form of protein that is absorbed the fastest, often preferred by elite athletes but it is also the most expensive.
Watch for Fillers and Sugars
Many protein powders contain fillers to increase weight and improve texture, but these offer little nutritional value. Look out for ingredients like maltodextrin, dextrose, skim milk powder, or various gums like xanthan gum. While some are for mixability, if they appear high on the ingredient list, the product is likely of lower quality. Similarly, check the sugar content. Many brands use artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame to improve taste. While often calorie-free, natural sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit are generally preferred. If your goal is lean muscle, aim for a powder with minimal added sugar.
Beware of 'Amino Spiking'
Amino spiking is a deceptive practice where manufacturers add cheap, low-grade amino acids like glycine or taurine to their powders. Standard tests measure protein content by checking for nitrogen, which all amino acids contain. This allows companies to falsely inflate the protein number on the label without providing the complete, muscle-building proteins consumers expect. These cheaper amino acids do not support muscle protein synthesis effectively. Red flags for amino spiking include vague "proprietary blends" on the label or a price that seems too good to be true. A trustworthy brand will be transparent about its amino acid profile.
Look for a Seal of Trust
In India, every legitimate food and supplement product must have a 14-digit FSSAI license number on the label. This is the minimum legal requirement and confirms the product is registered with the national food safety regulator. You can verify this number on the FSSAI website to ensure it's authentic. Beyond this, look for third-party certifications from bodies like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport. These certifications verify that the product contains what the label claims and is free from banned substances, offering an extra layer of confidence in its quality and safety.
