The critical travel corridor between India's tech capital, Bengaluru, and its financial hub, Mumbai, just received a major upgrade. Indian Railways has launched a new Vande Bharat Sleeper service, promising to slash travel times.
A New Era for Overnight Travel
Indian Railways has officially
flagged off the much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Bengaluru and Mumbai. The inaugural special ran on November 1, 2026, with regular services commencing from November 2 from Mumbai and November 3 from Bengaluru. This new service marks a significant step in modernising overnight train journeys on one of the country's busiest routes, which has long been in need of faster connectivity. The train is expected to serve a high volume of professionals, tourists, and families travelling between the two metropolises. It is the second Vande Bharat in a sleeper format to be launched in India.
Timings, Route, and a 16-Hour Journey
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper drastically cuts down the journey time to around 16 hours, a significant improvement over the 22 to 24 hours taken by other popular trains like the Udyan Express. Train number 27652 will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and reach CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. In the return direction, train number 27651 will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and arrive at SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM the following day. The service will run six days a week, with no service from Bengaluru on Mondays and from Mumbai on Tuesdays. It will have limited stops at key stations including Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal, and Anantapur, ensuring a faster transit.
Inside the Vande Bharat Sleeper: Comfort and Features
The 16-coach train is designed to offer a superior travel experience compared to conventional sleeper trains. It has a total capacity of 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class (24 berths), AC 2-Tier (188 berths), and AC 3-Tier (611 berths). The berths are ergonomically designed with better cushioning for enhanced comfort. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights and charging points, including USB ports. The coaches feature automatic doors, sensor-based taps in bio-vacuum toilets, and improved soundproofing for a quieter journey. For safety, the train is equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and advanced fire safety measures.
Fares and How to Book Your Ticket
Ticket prices for the new service are positioned at a premium level, reflecting the enhanced speed and comfort. A journey from Bengaluru to Mumbai costs approximately ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹4,450 for First AC. Fares may vary depending on dynamic pricing and whether catering services are chosen. While this is higher than the Udyan Express, where a 3AC ticket is around ₹1,425, it remains a competitive option against budget airlines, whose fares can start from ₹5,300 and go much higher, especially when factoring in airport travel and baggage costs. Bookings are open and can be made through the IRCTC website, mobile apps, or at passenger reservation counters.
