The New Rules of the Game
For years, complimentary lounge access was a standard feature on many credit cards, a simple way for banks to attract new customers. However, as passenger traffic surged and lounges became increasingly crowded, the cost for banks subsidising these visits
ballooned. In response, major Indian banks like HDFC, ICICI, and Axis Bank have introduced a significant change: spend-based qualification. Now, access is often not guaranteed. Instead, cardholders must meet a minimum spending requirement, such as spending ₹35,000 in the previous quarter, to unlock their lounge visits for the next one. This shifts the perk from a freebie to a reward for active, profitable customers, forcing users to be more strategic.
Consolidate Your Daily Spending
The most fundamental strategy to meet these new milestones is consolidation. Instead of spreading expenses across multiple cards, UPI, and cash, young professionals are channelling every possible rupee through their primary lounge-access card. This includes daily purchases like groceries, dining out, online shopping, and fuel. The goal isn't necessarily to spend more, but to spend smarter by ensuring all routine transactions contribute to the quarterly target. Even small, individual purchases add up significantly over a three-month period, often making the difference in meeting the threshold without altering one's lifestyle.
Automate All Your Bills
Recurring payments are a goldmine for hitting spending targets. Strategically setting up all monthly and quarterly bills to be paid via your target credit card is a highly effective, low-effort method. This includes utility bills (electricity, water, gas), mobile and internet recharges, streaming subscriptions, and insurance premiums. These are predictable, non-discretionary expenses that you have to pay anyway. By automating them on your credit card, you create a consistent baseline of spending each month that gets you a substantial part of the way toward your goal without any active effort.
Time Your Big-Ticket Purchases
Major planned expenses offer a powerful way to clear spending milestones in one go. Whether it's a new laptop, a smartphone upgrade, home appliances, or booking a family holiday, timing these purchases is key. By aligning a large transaction with a quarter where you might otherwise fall short, you can easily meet the requirement. Some users even plan their annual electronics or furniture shopping around their card's billing cycle to maximize this benefit. Many cards also offer no-cost EMI options on big purchases, but it's important to verify if EMI transactions are eligible for milestone calculations, as some banks exclude them.
Become the 'Go-To' for Group Expenses
Social spending can be a surprisingly effective tool. When out with friends or colleagues, offering to pay the full bill on your card and having others reimburse you via UPI is a common tactic. This applies to group dinners, movie tickets, and even booking travel for a trip with friends. You're not spending more of your own money, but you are routing a larger transaction volume through your card. Similarly, many young professionals use their personal cards for reimbursable business expenses, such as booking flights or hotels for work travel, further adding to their quarterly spend total.
