The Myth of the In-App Spending Cap
First, let's clear up a common misconception. Most popular UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm do not currently allow you to set your own custom daily spending limit directly within the app itself. The primary limit is a high ceiling of ₹1 lakh
per day, set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which is not useful for controlling small, daily expenses. This means if you're looking for a simple slider to cap your daily chai and snack budget at ₹300, you won't find it in the app's main settings. But don't worry—effective controls do exist, you just need to know where to look. Instead of relying on the payment app, the real power lies with your bank and in forming smarter spending habits.
Hack 1: Set Limits Directly With Your Bank
Your most powerful tool is your bank's own net banking portal or mobile app. Many banks allow you to set custom transaction limits for your account, which then apply to all UPI transactions linked to it. Log in to your bank's website or app and look for a section titled “Manage Limits,” “Transaction Limits,” or “UPI Settings.” Here, you can often lower your daily UPI transaction limit from the default ₹1 lakh to a more sensible amount that aligns with your budget. By setting a lower limit at the source, you create a hard stop that no UPI app can override, effectively building your own safety net against impulse spending. If you can't find this option, you can call or visit your bank branch to request a lower daily limit.
Hack 2: Embrace UPI Lite for Small Spends
UPI Lite is a feature designed specifically for small, everyday payments and it's a brilliant way to self-regulate. It works like a small digital wallet that you load with funds from your bank account. You can hold a maximum of ₹2,000 in the wallet at any time, and each transaction is capped at ₹500, with no PIN required. By using UPI Lite for all your small daily purchases, you create a natural spending boundary. Once the wallet is empty, you have to consciously decide to reload it, which interrupts the cycle of mindless spending. An added bonus is that these tiny transactions don't clutter your main bank statement, as only the lump-sum top-ups are recorded.
Hack 3: The Dedicated 'Spending' Account
A highly effective psychological trick is to open a secondary bank account dedicated solely to your discretionary spending. At the beginning of each month, transfer your allocated 'fun money' into this account and link only this account to your UPI apps. Your primary salary account, meant for rent, bills, and savings, remains unlinked and safe from impulsive taps. This method forces you to operate within a predefined budget. When the spending account runs low, you know you've hit your limit for the month, making you more mindful of every purchase without having to meticulously track each one.
Hack 4: Automate Your Awareness with Tracker Apps
If you don't want to manually limit your funds, you can increase your awareness instead. Several third-party expense tracker apps are designed for the Indian market and can automatically monitor your spending. Apps like BillShot or MoneyMind can track your expenses by reading your transaction SMS alerts or by having you share payment screenshots. They categorise your spending, showing you exactly where your money is going—how much on food, travel, or shopping. Seeing a visual breakdown of your UPI habits can be a powerful wake-up call and the first step toward changing them.
Hack 5: The Weekly Review Ritual
Finally, the simplest hack requires no extra apps or accounts: a weekly review. Set aside 15 minutes every Sunday to open your primary UPI app and scroll through your transaction history. Don't judge, just observe. How many times did you order coffee? How many small, unplanned purchases did you make? This simple act of reflection builds financial mindfulness. Seeing the cumulative total of dozens of small spends can be startling and is often enough motivation to be more conscious in the week ahead. It transforms mindless spending into a series of deliberate choices, putting you back in the driver's seat of your finances.
