What is the New Flight Connection?
Air India is launching a direct, non-stop service between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). This is significant because, for the upcoming winter season, Air India will be the only
carrier operating direct flights between India's financial hub and Canada's largest city. The service will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flights are scheduled to depart Mumbai at 4:00 AM local time and arrive in Toronto at 10:00 AM local time the same day. The return flights will leave Toronto at 1:30 PM and land in Mumbai the following afternoon. This new route will be serviced by Air India's Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which features an upgraded three-class configuration including First Class suites, flat-bed Business Class seats, and Economy Class seats.
Why Is the Flight 'Seasonal'?
Airlines often introduce routes on a seasonal basis to match travel demand and maximise profitability. An airline might offer flights to a popular ski destination only in the winter, or to a summer holiday spot only during peak vacation months. The India-Canada route sees significant peaks in demand driven by student travel cycles, holidays like Diwali, and the winter festive season when many in the diaspora travel to visit family. By operating this Mumbai-Toronto flight seasonally for the IATA Winter schedule—from late October to late March—Air India can cater to this high-demand period without committing an aircraft year-round if the demand dips significantly during the off-season.
What Does This Mean for Travellers?
For the upcoming winter, this new service will run from October 25, 2026, to March 26, 2027. During these five months, travellers will have a much-needed non-stop option, cutting down what is often a 20+ hour journey with one or two stops to a more manageable 16 hours. For those travelling from cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, it provides a more convenient connection through Mumbai's growing international hub. Outside of this seasonal window, passengers will likely have to revert to the existing options: connecting via Delhi, or flying with international carriers through hubs in Europe or the Middle East. It's also worth noting that Air Canada has previously operated seasonal Mumbai-Toronto routes but has not scheduled one for the upcoming winter, making Air India the sole direct operator for now.
What Is the Likely Impact on Fares?
Direct flights typically command a premium for their convenience, but their introduction can also create more competition and put downward pressure on the prices of connecting flights. The addition of nearly 2,000 seats per week on this corridor should increase overall capacity and choice for consumers. This route is part of a larger expansion by Air India in the Canadian market, which includes deploying brand-new or fully upgraded aircraft on all Toronto flights from January 2027. This increase in premium seating capacity by 71% to Toronto indicates a strong focus on capturing business and high-end leisure travellers. While last-minute direct flights during peak season will likely remain expensive, those who book in advance may find competitive fares compared to the total cost and time of a one-stop journey.
Who Stands to Benefit Most?
The primary beneficiaries are the vast numbers of people travelling between these two major economic centres. This includes the large student population heading to universities in Ontario, the massive Indo-Canadian diaspora visiting friends and relatives (VFR), and growing business traffic. For elderly travellers or families with young children, avoiding a layover and the hassle of re-clearing security at a transit airport is a significant advantage. Furthermore, the seamless connectivity through Mumbai's hub benefits passengers from across western and southern India, who now have a one-stop option to Canada that avoids a lengthy domestic transfer to Delhi.
