Day 1: Cultural Immersion in Kandy
Your journey begins in Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital. Spend your first day acclimatising to the vibrant energy of this city nestled in the hills. The main event is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism's most
sacred sites. Plan your visit to coincide with one of the daily ceremonies for a truly atmospheric experience. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll around the scenic Kandy Lake, a man-made lake in the heart of the city. For sunset, head up to the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, which offers panoramic views of the entire city. As a backpacker, you'll find plenty of affordable guesthouses and local eateries, called 'hotels', serving delicious rice and curry. Settle in for the night, ready for an early start.
Day 2: The World's Most Scenic Train Ride
Today is all about the journey. The train ride from Kandy to Ella is legendary among travellers and for good reason. This slow-moving train winds its way through rolling green hills, past cascading waterfalls, and over stunning stone bridges. The roughly seven-hour journey is an experience in itself. For the best views of the tea plantations, try to grab a seat on the right side of the train. Unreserved second or third-class tickets allow you to stand by the open doorways, offering incredible photo opportunities and a refreshing breeze. It's a quintessential Sri Lankan experience that connects you with both the landscape and local life. Arrive in the cool, misty town of Ella in the late afternoon and check into your guesthouse.
Day 3: Hiking and Views in Ella
Wake up to the crisp mountain air of Ella, a backpacker's paradise. Start your morning with a hike. You have two popular options: Little Adam's Peak, an easier climb with rewarding views, or the more challenging Ella Rock for the adventurous. Both offer breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding valleys. Later, walk along the tracks to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, an architectural marvel from the colonial era. Time your visit to watch a train rumble across the bridge for a classic photo. Spend the afternoon exploring Ella's main street, which is lined with laid-back cafes and restaurants offering a mix of Western and Sri Lankan food. It's the perfect place to relax after a morning of hiking.
Day 4: South to the Sun-Drenched Coast
It's time to swap the mountains for the sea. The journey from Ella to the south coast is most efficiently done by bus. Catch the direct bus (route 31) from Ella towards Matara; the journey takes about five hours and is a fascinating way to see the landscape transform from highlands to coastal plains. From Matara, it's a short 20-minute bus or tuk-tuk ride to Mirissa. After arriving and checking into a beachside hostel, your only job is to kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes. Head to Coconut Tree Hill for one of Sri Lanka's most iconic sunset views before enjoying a fresh seafood dinner at one of the many restaurants lining the beach.
Day 5: Whale Watching and Beach Bliss in Mirissa
Your final day is dedicated to the wonders of the Indian Ocean. Mirissa is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, with chances to spot magnificent blue whales and dolphins. Tours typically leave early in the morning, returning by midday. After your marine adventure, spend the rest of the day relaxing on Mirissa Beach or exploring nearby coves like Secret Beach for a quieter atmosphere. If you're feeling active, you can rent a board and try some beginner-friendly surfing. As your whirlwind five-day tour concludes, you can easily arrange transport from Mirissa to Colombo's international airport or continue your journey along Sri Lanka's beautiful southern coast.
