The Current Forecast: A Mixed Bag of Rain
According to the latest bulletins from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the forecast for Peninsular India presents a complex picture. For the week stretching from August 17th to August 23rd, widespread rainfall is expected to continue over Kerala
and coastal Karnataka for the initial few days before tapering off. However, for the majority of the southern peninsula—including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and both north and south interior Karnataka—the prediction is for much more subdued, "isolated to scattered" rainfall. This pattern of sporadic showers, rather than the consistent, soaking rains typical of August, is at the heart of the current concern. While some areas will see thunderstorms and gusty winds, the overall intensity and spread of the monsoon are expected to be below their peak performance.
The Bigger Picture: A Season of Deficit
This weak phase isn't happening in isolation. The 2026 monsoon season began on a sluggish note, and despite a recovery in July for some parts of the country, it has left a significant rainfall deficit in its wake. As of early August, the cumulative seasonal rainfall for the country was already running at a 12% deficit from the Long Period Average (LPA). For South India, the shortfall has been even more pronounced. Official data revealed substantial deficits in several states, including a concerning 35% below-normal rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, 22% in Kerala, and over 20% across both coastal and south interior Karnataka. This existing deficit means the region has a smaller buffer to withstand a prolonged weak spell, putting more pressure on water resources and agriculture.
The Meteorological Culprit: El Niño's Influence
Meteorologists point to a primary cause for this season's erratic behaviour: the strengthening El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters, which disrupts atmospheric circulation globally. For India, it typically means a weaker monsoon. The warm waters shift the zone of heavy rainfall away from the subcontinent, resulting in suppressed monsoon winds and prolonged dry spells. The IMD has confirmed that moderate El Niño conditions are currently active and are a major driver behind the monsoon's underperformance. Historically, El Niño years have a strong correlation with below-average rainfall and even drought conditions in India, making its presence a key factor in the current forecast.
Anxious Fields: The Impact on Agriculture
For millions of farmers across South India, the timing of this weak spell is critical. The success of summer-sown Kharif crops like paddy, cotton, soybean, and pulses is heavily dependent on the rainfall received in July and August. After planting was undertaken following July's rains, the current subdued phase threatens crop health due to reduced soil moisture. A lack of consistent rain can lead to moisture stress, potentially stunting growth and reducing yields. With nearly half of India's farmland lacking irrigation, the monsoon's performance is not just a weather report but a determining factor in rural livelihoods and, by extension, national food security and inflation.
Beyond the Farm: Water and Urban Concerns
The ripple effects of a weak monsoon extend far beyond agriculture. The season's rainfall is crucial for replenishing the region's major reservoirs. These reservoirs are the primary source of drinking water for bustling cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, and they also feed the hydroelectric power plants that contribute to the energy grid. A significant deficit can lead to pressure on urban water supplies, potentially necessitating water rationing in the months to come. Furthermore, lower reservoir levels can strain power generation, creating a cascading impact on industries and households alike. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels, aware that the monsoon's performance in the next few weeks will dictate water management strategies for the rest of the year.
