In an effort to cool down, it simply produces more sweat, which drips off without providing much cooling benefit. This forces your system into overdrive, raising your heart rate and making you feel exhausted as it works harder to regulate your core temperature.

The minerals you lose in sweat are known as electrolytes. These are not just trace elements; they are vital minerals that carry an electrical charge and are essential for your body's most basic functions. The primary electrolytes lost in sweat are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Think of them as the body's internal communication and regulation team. They help transmit nerve signals, facilitate muscle contractions, maintain fluid balance, and even keep your heartbeat steady. Sodium is the most abundant electrolyte lost, crucial for fluid balance, while potassium is vital for muscle and nerve function. Magnesium supports energy production and helps prevent cramps.
Recognising the Signs of Mineral Loss
When you lose too many electrolytes through excessive sweating, your body sends out warning signals. Often, these are mistaken for simple dehydration or fatigue. Early signs of an electrolyte imbalance can include muscle cramps or weakness, fatigue that feels disproportionate to your activity level, headaches, and dizziness. In more significant cases, you might experience an irregular heartbeat, nausea, or mental confusion. It's crucial to listen to these signals. Even a simple homemade solution of water with a pinch of high-mineral salt like Himalayan pink salt can significantly help your body absorb and retain the fluid more effectively.

You can also replenish lost minerals through your diet. Many everyday foods are packed with the electrolytes your body needs after a sweaty day. For a potassium boost, turn to bananas, spinach (palak), sweet potatoes, and avocados. Dairy products like yogurt and milk are excellent sources of calcium and also provide sodium and potassium. Lentils, beans, and nuts like almonds are great for magnesium.
