The Annual Challenge: Mumbai's Festive Exodus
Every year, the weeks leading up to Diwali and Chhath Puja see an enormous surge in travel demand from Mumbai. Lakhs of people working and living in the city plan their trips back to their hometowns across the country, particularly to states like Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, and other parts of Maharashtra. This exodus puts immense pressure on the railway network, leading to tickets on popular routes being sold out within minutes of bookings opening. The result is long waiting lists, soaring prices for alternative travel, and a stressful experience for many trying to get home for the festivals.
Railways' Solution: 418 Special Services
To address this predictable rush, Central Railway has announced a substantial plan for the 2026 festive season. A total of 418 special train services will be operated between October and November, specifically to cater to the demand during Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath. These services are not part of the regular schedule but are additional trips designed to increase capacity on the most sought-after routes, offering a lifeline to those who struggled to secure tickets on regular trains. These trains will originate from major Mumbai terminals like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), as well as from Pune and Nagpur.
Key Destinations Covered
These special trains will connect Mumbai with a wide array of destinations. A major focus is on routes to North India, with 64 daily special services planned between CSMT and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. Other significant routes include bi-weekly services from LTT to Mau and Banaras. For those travelling south, there are weekly AC special services from CSMT to Chennai Beach and SMVT Bengaluru. The schedule also includes enhanced connectivity within Maharashtra, with special services to Latur, Nagpur, and Kolhapur. Furthermore, weekly specials will run from LTT to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, catering to passengers heading to the southwestern coast.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains opened in stages starting September 27 and 28, 2026. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the RailOne mobile app, and at all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Given the high demand, it's crucial to act fast. Experts advise saving passenger details and payment methods on the IRCTC platform in advance to speed up the booking process. Railway officials have urged passengers to check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app for detailed timings and halts before their journey and to travel only with valid tickets to avoid any issues.
What This Means For Your Travel Plans
The introduction of 418 special services is a significant measure that will undoubtedly alleviate some of the pressure on Mumbai's railway infrastructure. It provides thousands of additional berths and gives many more people a chance to travel home. However, it's important to have realistic expectations. Demand during the festive season is exceptionally high, and even with these extra trains, securing a confirmed ticket will remain competitive. These special services are a crucial support system, but they don't eliminate the need for proactive planning. The best advice remains to book as early as possible and explore alternative dates if your preferred travel day is full.
