The New Rule: 30 Days, Visa-Free
After some back-and-forth, the Thai cabinet has confirmed its latest visa policy. Indian travellers will continue to enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand. The main change is the duration: the stay permitted under this visa exemption is now 30 days. This
decision brings relief and clarity after a proposal in May 2026 created confusion by suggesting an end to the visa-free scheme for Indians, which had reportedly led to a drop in tourist arrivals. The government has now reversed that course, settling on this 30-day rule to provide stability for travellers. This move replaces the previous, more generous 60-day visa-free stay that was in effect. Essentially, travel remains just as easy, but the maximum trip length without a formal visa application has been shortened.
Why This is Good News for Travellers
The confirmation of a 30-day visa-free stay is a significant win for Indian tourists. The primary benefit is convenience and cost savings. You can board a flight to Thailand for a holiday without the need for pre-applying for a visa or paying any visa fees upon arrival. This eliminates the paperwork and processing time associated with both e-visas and the visa-on-arrival system. For the vast majority of Indian tourists, a 30-day window is more than sufficient. According to official data, the average stay for an Indian tourist in Thailand is just over seven days. This new policy aligns perfectly with typical holiday patterns, making spontaneous trips and planned vacations much simpler to organise. You can book your flights and hotels knowing that entry will be a straightforward process at the airport.
Thailand’s Motive: Balancing Tourism and Security
So, why the change from 60 days to 30? The Thai government's decision is a strategic move to balance two key priorities: boosting its vital tourism sector while enhancing national security. India is one of Thailand's largest and most important tourism markets, ranking third after China and Malaysia. After the confusing announcement in May about possibly revoking visa-free access, Thailand saw a noticeable decline in Indian arrivals. Reinstating a clear visa-free policy was crucial to restore confidence. However, authorities were also concerned that the longer 60-day stay was being misused by some for illegal work or other activities not permitted under a tourist visa. The 30-day limit is seen as a compromise. According to Thailand’s Tourism Minister, it aligns with the actual travel behaviour of most Indian tourists while allowing the government to better manage border controls.
What You Still Need for Hassle-Free Entry
While you don't need a visa, you can't just show up with your passport alone. To ensure a smooth entry, Indian travellers should have a few key documents ready. First, your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. Immigration officials will also expect to see a confirmed return flight ticket and proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings for your stay. It is also wise to be prepared to show proof of sufficient funds for your trip, although this is not always checked. Finally, travellers may need to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before landing. Always check the latest requirements on the official Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate website before you travel, as rules can be updated.
