A Game-Changer for Valley Connectivity
For years, reaching the Kashmir Valley was an adventure in itself, often reliant on the unpredictable conditions of National Highway 44. The launch of the Vande Bharat service has revolutionised this journey. Commercial services, which began in May 2026,
now connect Jammu directly to Srinagar, slashing travel time from a grueling 7-10 hours by road to just under five hours by train. This all-weather rail link, a marvel of engineering, ensures reliable, year-round connectivity, bypassing the frequent disruptions caused by snowfall and landslides that could previously strand travellers for days. The service is a part of the ambitious USBRL project, which features incredible feats like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge.
Route, Schedule, and Key Stops
The Vande Bharat Express currently operates between Jammu Tawi (JAT) and Srinagar (SINA), with services running six days a week (no service on Tuesdays). Train number 26401 departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, arriving in Srinagar around 11:10 AM. The return train, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reaches Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. Key stops along this scenic route include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Udhampur, Reasi, and Banihal, strategically chosen to serve pilgrims, locals, and tourists alike. Due to high demand, Indian Railways has already added a third service and increased the number of coaches to 20 per train, so it's always wise to check the latest timetables on the official IRCTC website before your journey.
What Makes This Vande Bharat Special
The Vande Bharat trains operating in Kashmir are not the standard models found elsewhere in India. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), they are specially designed to handle the region's extreme climate. These trains feature advanced heating systems to keep interiors comfortable and prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing in temperatures as low as -20°C. The driver's cabin is equipped with a heated windshield to prevent fogging, ensuring clear visibility during harsh winter conditions. Passengers can enjoy the journey with amenities like fully air-conditioned coaches, large observation windows, rotatable seats, and on-board catering, making the ride as spectacular as the destination itself.
Exploring from Key Stations
The train doesn't just transport you; it opens up new gateways to explore Kashmir's beauty. From Banihal station, you can access picturesque spots like Nilpal Lamber, a picnic spot with a waterfall just 5 km away, or Thandi-chhah, known for its scenic meadows. The final stop, Baramulla, is a destination in its own right and a base for further exploration. Located on the banks of the Jhelum River, it offers access to the ski paradise of Gulmarg (30 km away), the vast Wular Lake, and historic sites like St. Joseph's Church and the ancient ruins of Parihaspora.
