The Official IMD Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the southwest monsoon is set to intensify across Karnataka, with widespread rainfall expected for the next seven days. For the coastal region specifically, a period of heavy rainfall is predicted,
accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. While a yellow alert is currently in place, forecasts indicate that the rainfall intensity is likely to increase from June 30th onwards. Widespread rain is expected across Coastal Karnataka from June 28th through July 4th, with isolated very heavy rainfall also likely on July 1st and 2nd. This pattern is driven by favorable monsoon conditions, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea.
Areas Under Alert
The primary areas of concern are the three coastal districts: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. These districts are expected to receive continuous and heavy rainfall throughout the week. The IMD has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for these areas from June 27th to June 30th. The weather department has specifically warned of heavy rain in these districts from June 29th to July 1st. Residents in these districts, as well as adjacent Malnad regions like Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, are advised to remain vigilant as the monsoon remains active.

The IMD uses a color-coded system to communicate the severity of weather events. It's crucial to understand what these alerts mean for your safety. A 'Green Alert' means no advisory is needed. A 'Yellow Alert', which is currently active, advises residents to 'Be Aware' or 'Be Updated', as weather conditions could worsen and disrupt daily activities. An 'Orange Alert' signifies 'Be Prepared', as it warns of extremely bad weather that could disrupt transport and other services. The most severe is a 'Red Alert', which means 'Take Action', as it indicates a significant threat to life and property from extremely heavy rainfall (over 204.5 mm in 24 hours) and widespread disruption.

With heavy rain and strong winds in the forecast, taking precautions is essential. The IMD advises the public to remain vigilant, especially farmers and fishermen. Fishermen are specifically warned against venturing into the Arabian Sea due to anticipated rough conditions and high wind speeds. For residents, it is crucial to avoid taking shelter under trees or in old, dilapidated buildings during thunderstorms. Prepare for potential waterlogging in low-lying areas and possible traffic disruptions. It is also wise to prepare an emergency kit with essentials in case of power outages or flooding. Stay away from waterlogged roads and always follow the latest advisories issued by local authorities and the disaster management cell.
The Bigger Monsoon Picture
This forecast of heavy rain comes after a period of significant rainfall deficit for the state. As of late June, Coastal Karnataka had recorded a 50% deficit in monsoon rainfall. This upcoming wet spell is expected to help reduce that deficit. The intensification is due to meteorological factors like troughs and cyclonic circulations that enhance rainfall activity along the coast. While the rain is vital for agriculture and replenishing water sources, the intensity can also pose risks. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas, particularly along the coast and in hilly districts, to be alert for waterlogging and localized flooding.
