The Deceptive Coolness of Clouds
On a bright, sunny day, the heat feels direct and obvious. We seek shade, drink water, and our bodies instinctively know to be cautious. But on an overcast day, the sun's rays are diffused. While clouds do block some solar radiation, leading to slightly
lower air temperatures, they create a false sense of security. This is because air temperature is only one part of the equation. The bigger, hidden danger on many cloudy days is humidity, which is often higher when it's overcast. This combination of heat and high humidity can put significant strain on your body's ability to cool itself, even without direct sunshine. Up to 80% of UV rays can still penetrate clouds, meaning risks like sunburn remain, but the more immediate threat is internal heat stress.
Understanding the Heat Index
To truly gauge the danger, experts advise looking beyond the thermometer and paying attention to the Heat Index. This metric, often called the 'feels like' temperature, combines air temperature with relative humidity to provide a more accurate measure of how hot it really feels to the human body. When humidity is high, the body's primary cooling mechanism—sweating—becomes less effective. Sweat cools the body by evaporating from the skin. But if the air is already saturated with moisture, as it is on a humid day, that evaporation process slows down dramatically or stops altogether. This means that even if the air temperature is a manageable 32°C, high humidity can make it feel like 40°C or higher, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illness.
Humidity: The Body’s Real Enemy
Your body is a remarkable machine, constantly working to maintain a core temperature of around 37°C. When you get hot, either from the environment or from physical exertion, you sweat. This is your built-in air conditioning system. The evaporation of that sweat from your skin is what pulls heat away from the body. High humidity sabotages this entire process. When sweat can't evaporate, it just drips off, providing little to no cooling effect. Your body, sensing that it is still overheating, responds by sweating even more, leading to rapid dehydration and loss of essential salts, or electrolytes. This vicious cycle is why a humid, cloudy day can be more dangerous than a dry, sunny day with the same air temperature. Your body is working overtime but achieving very little cooling, causing your internal temperature to rise.
Recognising the Danger Signs
It is crucial to know the difference between heat exhaustion and the more severe heatstroke. Heat exhaustion is the body's response to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually through sweating. Symptoms include heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, dizziness, and headache. If you experience these, it's a warning to stop all activity, move to a cooler place, and rehydrate. Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency where the body's temperature control system fails completely. The hallmark sign of heatstroke is a change in mental status, such as confusion, slurred speech, or loss of consciousness. The skin may be hot and red, and the person might stop sweating. Body temperature can rise to 40°C or higher, which can cause permanent disability or death if not treated immediately.
How to Stay Safe on Overcast Days
Protecting yourself on hot, cloudy days requires a shift in mindset. First, always check the Heat Index, not just the temperature. Plan strenuous activities for the coolest parts of the day, typically early morning or late evening. Hydration is key; drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty, and avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks which can accelerate dehydration. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. If you feel yourself getting overheated, take immediate action. Move to an air-conditioned space, take a cool shower, or apply cool, wet cloths to your body. And remember to check on vulnerable neighbours, especially the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions, who are at greater risk.
