A 'GEO-IMAGING' SATELLITE
Unlike many Earth-imaging satellites that circle the planet in low orbits and revisit a location only every few days, EOS-05 is a geo-imaging satellite. It was launched into a geosynchronous transfer orbit and will eventually be positioned approximately
36,000 kilometres above the Earth's surface. At this altitude, its orbit is synchronized with the Earth's rotation, allowing it to seemingly 'hover' over the Indian subcontinent. This gives it the unique ability to provide near real-time, continuous observation of a large area, a significant advantage for tracking rapidly developing events. India has operated weather satellites in this type of orbit for years, but EOS-05 is the country's first imaging satellite designed for this high perch.
TRACKING DISASTERS IN REAL TIME
One of the most critical applications for EOS-05 is disaster management. Its ability to constantly watch over a vast region makes it an invaluable tool for monitoring natural disasters as they unfold. The satellite can track the development and movement of cyclones, monitor widespread flooding, and detect forest fires across the country. This near-continuous stream of data can provide authorities with timely and actionable information, enabling quicker response times, more effective resource deployment, and better-informed evacuation warnings. The mission builds on the objectives of its predecessor, EOS-03, which was also designed for rapid monitoring of such events before its launch vehicle failed in 2021.
ADVANCED ALL-WEATHER VISION
EOS-05 is equipped with advanced sensor technology, including L-band and S-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Unlike traditional optical cameras that rely on light and are hindered by clouds, darkness, or adverse weather, SAR is an active sensor. It sends out its own microwave pulses and reads the signals that bounce back, effectively allowing it to 'see' through clouds, haze, and the dark of night. This all-weather, day-and-night capability is crucial for a country like India, where monsoon clouds can obscure vast regions for months. It ensures that ISRO can gather reliable data for agriculture, hydrology, and security applications regardless of the conditions on the ground.
A BOOST FOR AGRICULTURE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Beyond disaster response, the satellite's mission has profound implications for India's economy and resource management. The data gathered by EOS-05 will be used for a wide range of applications, including monitoring crop health, assessing forest cover, and managing water bodies.
