The ₹500 Visa Is Real
It might sound too good to be true, but the headline figure is correct. For Indian passport holders, the official fee for a Japan visa is just ₹500. This applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry short-term visas, covering tourism, business, or visiting
friends and relatives. This incredibly low fee is the result of a long-standing special agreement between India and Japan. In fact, while Japan raised its visa fees for most countries globally from July 1, 2026, the concessional rate for Indians was kept in place, making it a better deal than ever.
Breaking Down the Actual Cost
While the ₹500 visa fee is the main component, it’s important to understand the full cost to avoid surprises. All applications submitted in India are handled by VFS Global, the official partner for the Embassy of Japan. VFS levies a mandatory, non-refundable service charge of ₹800 per application. This means the minimum you will pay to submit your application is ₹1,300 (₹500 visa fee + ₹800 service charge). There are also optional services you can choose, such as a courier service to have your passport returned to your home or office, which typically costs an additional ₹550. Even with these charges, the total cost remains remarkably low compared to the visa fees for many other popular destinations.
Your Essential Document Checklist
A smooth application process depends on having all your documents in order. While requirements can vary slightly based on the specific visa type, a standard tourist visa application will generally require the following: a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages; a completed visa application form; a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background; a detailed day-by-day itinerary of your planned trip; confirmed return flight bookings; proof of accommodation for your entire stay, such as hotel reservations; and a cover letter explaining the purpose of your visit.
Proving Your Financial Stability
Like most countries, Japan requires proof that you can financially support yourself during your stay. For this, you will need to submit your latest bank statements for the last six months, showing a healthy closing balance. In addition, you must provide your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the last two or three years. If you are a salaried employee, you will also need to include your last three months' salary slips and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or leave approval letter from your employer confirming your travel dates. These documents assure the consulate that you have stable ties to India and intend to return after your trip.
The Application Process, Simplified
Once your documents are ready, the process is straightforward. First, download and fill out the correct visa application form from the VFS Global website. Next, gather all your supporting documents as per the checklist. The third step is to schedule an appointment at your nearest VFS Japan Visa Application Centre. On the day of your appointment, submit your application and documents in person and pay the required fees. You can then track the status of your application online. Remember, Japan does not offer a visa-on-arrival facility for Indian citizens, so you must complete this process before you travel.
