As India's high streets gear up for the bustling end-of-year festival season, a massive, strategic effort is underway behind the scenes. Retailers are embarking on ambitious recruitment drives to manage the surge in shoppers.
A Nationwide Hiring Surge
India's retail and e-commerce
sectors are projected to create between 2.5 and 2.7 lakh temporary and gig jobs in the latter half of 2026, marking a significant 15-20% increase over the previous year. This boom is driven by the extended festive calendar, which starts as early as August and runs through Diwali, Christmas, and the New Year. The hiring spree isn't just confined to major metropolitan areas; Tier-II and Tier-III cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, and Coimbatore are experiencing faster growth in job creation as organised retail and delivery networks expand across the country. These smaller cities are expected to account for a substantial portion of the new roles, highlighting a major geographical shift in the consumer economy.
The Shift from Volume to Specialised Skills
This year, the focus of recruitment has evolved beyond simply hiring more hands. Companies are now seeking candidates with specialised skills capable of navigating a technologically advanced retail environment. The rise of 'phygital' retail—blending physical stores with digital operations—has created demand for roles that didn't exist a few years ago. These include dark-store inventory controllers, returns management specialists, and warehouse automation operators. Traditional roles like sales associates and delivery executives remain crucial, but they are now expected to be comfortable with digital tools, from QR code demonstrations to managing online orders for in-store pickup.
Modern Strategies for a Competitive Market
To secure talent in a competitive market, retailers are adopting more sophisticated and proactive hiring strategies. The recruitment cycle now begins much earlier, with many companies starting their workforce planning 12 to 14 weeks before the peak season. This allows them to build pre-assessed talent pools and ensure new hires are trained and ready before the festive rush kicks in. Employers are using a mix of permanent, temporary, and on-demand gig workers to create a flexible 'core-plus-flex' workforce. To attract and retain staff, companies are offering higher wages—with salaries expected to climb by 8-10%—along with attendance bonuses and performance-linked incentives.
More Than Just a Temporary Job
While the majority of festive roles are temporary, there is a growing trend of using this period as a pipeline for long-term talent. According to one report, 74% of employers expect to retain at least 10% of their festive hires through contract extensions or permanent roles. This shift indicates that companies are viewing seasonal recruitment not just as a shortterm fix but as a strategic opportunity to identify and assess potential longterm employees. For many workers, the possibility of converting a seasonal job into a more permanent position is a key factor in accepting these roles.
