Special Trains Announced for Key Routes
To accommodate the massive surge in passenger traffic during the festive season, various zones of Indian Railways, including Northern, Central, and Southern Railways, have announced hundreds of special train services. These trains are crucial for connecting
major metropolitan areas with states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which see a high volume of travellers returning home. Announcements in late September 2026 confirmed numerous services running through October and November. For instance, Central Railway alone has added 418 special services, with many connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to destinations like Gorakhpur, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Similarly, Northern Railway has launched services on high-demand routes connecting Delhi, Ayodhya, Chandigarh, and Firozpur with destinations like Varanasi and Patna.
How and Where to Book Your Tickets
The primary and most reliable platform for booking these special trains is the official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and its official mobile app, Rail Connect. Bookings can also be made at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. It is highly advisable to use only these authorised channels to book your tickets to avoid fraudulent websites and transactions. Some railway zones have already commenced bookings for these festive specials starting from the last week of September 2026. Be aware that these special trains often have 'special charges', which means fares may be higher than regular services on the same route.
Master the Booking Window: Tips for Success
Securing a confirmed ticket on these high-demand trains is like a race against time. The booking window for regular trains typically opens 60 days in advance at 8:00 AM. For special trains, the announcement window can be much shorter, sometimes just 10 to 30 days before departure, making it essential to act fast. To improve your chances, create an IRCTC account well in advance and use the 'Master List' feature to pre-save passenger details. This saves crucial seconds during the booking rush. Logging in a few minutes before the booking opens and using faster payment methods like UPI or the IRCTC e-wallet can also significantly speed up the checkout process.
Focus on High-Demand Routes
The bulk of the special trains are concentrated on routes with the heaviest passenger load. Key routes to watch include services from Mumbai (CSMT and LTT) to Gorakhpur, Banaras, and Mau for travellers heading to Uttar Pradesh. For those going to Bihar, special trains from Chandigarh and Firozpur to Patna are operational. There are also significant services connecting Delhi and its surrounding areas (like Anand Vihar Terminal) to cities like Ayodhya and Varanasi. Southern Railway has also introduced trains connecting Bengaluru with northern cities like Kanpur to facilitate festive travel. Keeping an eye on press releases from zonal railways is the best way to get specific train numbers and schedules.
Understanding Tatkal and Waitlists
If you miss the initial booking window, the Tatkal quota is your next best bet for a last-minute ticket. Tatkal booking for AC classes opens at 10:00 AM and for non-AC (Sleeper) classes at 11:00 AM, one day before the train's departure from its originating station. The same tips for speedy booking—using a master list and fast payment options—are even more critical for Tatkal, as seats are extremely limited and get booked within seconds. If your ticket is waitlisted (WL), don't lose hope entirely. Monitor your PNR status regularly, as many waitlisted tickets get confirmed closer to the travel date, especially if the waitlist number is low. After the final chart is prepared, you can also check for current availability for any vacant berths.
