The goal is to simulate a one-on-one session with a human tutor who helps you think, rather than a textbook that just tells you facts.

For decades, educators have referenced Benjamin Bloom's “2 sigma problem,” which found that students receiving one-on-one tutoring performed significantly better than those in a traditional classroom. High-quality AI study modes offer a chance to scale this personalised attention in a way that was previously impossible. They can adapt to each student’s individual pace, offering extra support where needed and moving ahead when a concept is mastered. Tools like Google's Gemini have specific learning modes built on educational science, designed to be conversational and informative. For a student struggling with a concept late at night, a well-designed AI tutor can provide immediate, guided help, breaking down complex topics into manageable parts and reinforcing learning through active engagement.
The Peril: The Illusion of Understanding
The most significant risk is that students will use these tools not as tutors, but as sophisticated answer keys. When a student can get a complete solution with a single click, it short-circuits the cognitive effort required for genuine learning. This process, known as cognitive offloading, involves using an external tool to avoid mental work. While helpful for simple tasks, over-reliance can hinder the development of long-term memory and critical thinking skills. Studies have shown mixed results; while students may perform better on tasks with AI assistance, it doesn't always translate to durable skills when the tool is taken away. A learner who is genuinely curious and motivated to understand a topic can use even a basic AI as a powerful learning partner by asking smart, iterative questions.
