Indian Railways is replacing its nearly 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a modern, cloud-based platform. The headline feature is a monumental increase in booking capacity. The old system could handle approximately 32,000 bookings per
minute. The new system is designed to process over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute—a nearly five-fold increase. This upgrade, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is one of the most significant overhauls to the railway infrastructure in decades. The phased migration to the new system began in August 2026, aiming to create a more robust and scalable backbone for the country's railway network.
The End of Tatkal Headaches?
The daily scramble for Tatkal tickets is a familiar trial for millions. The simultaneous rush of users frequently overwhelmed the old system, leading to crashes, slow responses, and frustration. The new system's ability to handle massive transaction volumes is specifically aimed at solving this problem. With a capacity to manage the huge traffic spikes during the 10 AM (AC classes) and 11 AM (non-AC classes) windows, the chances of encountering a system failure are expected to drop significantly. While demand will still be high, the platform itself will be far more stable, making the booking experience smoother and fairer. Early data from the beta website, launched in July 2026, already showed a noticeable improvement in the speed of Tatkal bookings.
More Than Just Bookings

The capacity for handling passenger enquiries—such as checking PNR status, seat availability, and train schedules—has seen an even more dramatic boost. It has jumped ten-fold, from around 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh. This is crucial because for every one person booking a ticket, many more are checking information. This means less waiting for pages to load and quicker access to vital travel data. Additionally, the new platform supports a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to users across the country.

The new IRCTC beta website, which is part of this transition, features a cleaner interface, fewer CAPTCHAs, and a simplified booking process. Furthermore, Indian Railways has introduced other passenger-friendly reforms, such as reducing the Advance Reservation Period from 120 days to 60 days to better align with actual travel planning and introducing Aadhaar-authenticated booking to improve fairness.
