Start with a Solid Foundation
The secret to makeup that lasts through humidity and rain begins before you even apply any colour. Prepping your skin correctly is non-negotiable. Start by cleansing your face to remove excess oil, then apply a lightweight, gel-based moisturiser that hydrates
without adding grease. The most critical step, however, is the primer. Opt for a silicone-based or mattifying primer. This creates a smooth, water-resistant barrier between your skin and makeup, filling in pores and preventing your foundation from sliding off. Think of it as a raincoat for your face; it shields your look from moisture and helps control the shine that humidity inevitably brings. Apply a thin layer, focusing on the T-zone and other areas where you tend to get oily.
Rethink Your Base
Heavy, full-coverage foundations are a recipe for disaster during the monsoon. When you sweat or get caught in a drizzle, thick formulas can look cakey, streaky, and unnatural. The key is to switch to lighter alternatives that let your skin breathe. BB creams, CC creams, or tinted moisturisers are perfect for everyday wear, as they even out your skin tone without feeling like a heavy mask. These lighter formulas are less likely to melt or slide in high humidity. For days when you need a bit more coverage, choose a long-wear, water-resistant liquid foundation but apply it sparingly. Use a damp makeup sponge to press the product into your skin in thin layers. This technique provides better longevity than simply rubbing it on.
Waterproof Your Eyes Completely
There's nothing worse than mascara running down your face, creating the dreaded 'raccoon eye' effect. During the monsoon, waterproof eye makeup is an absolute must. Invest in a good quality waterproof mascara to keep your lashes voluminous and smudge-free, even through a downpour. The same rule applies to your eyeliner and kajal. Gel eyeliners or smudge-proof and waterproof pencils are formulated to resist moisture and will stay put without fading or smearing. For eyebrows, a waterproof brow gel or pencil will ensure they remain defined and perfectly in place, framing your face without any risk of smudging onto your forehead.
Embrace Creams, Powders, and Tints
For a healthy, natural-looking flush, cream blushes are an excellent choice as they blend seamlessly into the skin for a dewy finish. However, to ensure they last in the humidity, it’s a good idea to lightly set them with a translucent powder. Alternatively, powder blushes are a reliable option for oily skin types as they help absorb excess oil and tend to have more staying power in humid conditions. An even better, more durable option for the season is a lip and cheek tint. These products stain the skin, providing a long-lasting pop of colour that won't budge or feel heavy. You can apply the same tint to your lips for a cohesive, fresh-faced look that's perfect for everyday wear.
Choose Matte for Your Lips
Glossy and creamy lipsticks tend to bleed and transfer easily, especially in the humid monsoon air. To avoid constant touch-ups, switch to matte lipstick formulas. Matte lipsticks, particularly liquid mattes, are designed for longevity. They dry down and set, making them highly resistant to smudging and transferring. You can eat, drink, and even get caught in a light shower without worrying about your lip colour disappearing. For a more subtle and low-maintenance option, lip stains are also a fantastic choice, providing a hint of colour that lasts for hours.
Lock It All In Place
After putting in the effort to create a monsoon-proof look, the final step is to ensure it stays that way. Locking your makeup in place is a two-step process. First, use a translucent setting powder. Lightly dust it over the areas that tend to get oily, like your T-zone, to absorb excess moisture and mattify your base. Second, and most importantly, finish with a setting spray. A good setting spray acts as an invisible shield, forming a protective layer over your makeup to seal everything in and prevent it from melting, creasing, or fading throughout the day. Hold the bottle at arm's length and mist it over your face in an 'X' and 'T' motion for even coverage.
