Nandi Hills: The Accessible Classic
Nandi Hills is arguably the most famous weekend destination for anyone in Bengaluru, and for good reason. Located just 60 km from the city, it’s the go-to choice for a hassle-free and rewarding sunrise experience. The trek itself is beginner-friendly,
with well-laid steps and even a motorable road leading to the top, making it accessible for families and first-time trekkers. The entire climb can take between two to three hours. At an altitude of about 4,850 feet, the summit offers panoramic views. On misty mornings, especially between September and February, you can witness a sea of clouds floating below you as the sun makes its grand entrance. Besides the sunrise, the hilltop has historical points of interest, including Tipu Sultan's summer palace and ancient temples.
Skandagiri: The Thrilling Night Trek
If the idea of trekking under a starlit sky to catch the sunrise excites you, Skandagiri is your calling. Situated about 70 km from Bengaluru, this trek is famous for its night-time ascents, culminating in a breathtaking sunrise view from above the clouds. The trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty. The trail, which is roughly 8 km long for a round trip, takes you through rocky paths and patches of dense shrubbery. The ascent typically takes around three to four hours. What makes Skandagiri special is the feeling of being in a different world as dawn breaks, with clouds blanketing the landscape below. It's crucial to know that trekking here requires a mandatory pre-booking through the Karnataka Eco-Tourism website, as only a limited number of trekkers are allowed each day. This measure ensures the trail remains pristine and the experience is safe for everyone.
Savandurga: The Monolithic Challenge
For those seeking a more physically demanding adventure, Savandurga offers a formidable challenge. Known as one of the largest monolith hills in Asia, it is located approximately 60 km from Bangalore. The trek is rated moderate to difficult, primarily because of its steep, bare rock surfaces. There are two main trails: Karigudda (the black hill) and Biligudda (the white hill), with Biligudda being the more popular and well-marked route. The ascent can take anywhere from two to three hours, depending on your fitness level. The raw, rugged beauty of the landscape and the panoramic views of the Arkavathi river and Manchanabele reservoir from the top are well worth the effort. An early start is highly recommended to avoid the intense heat that radiates off the rock later in the day and to catch the sunrise. This trek is ideal for seasoned hikers or adventurous beginners looking to test their endurance.
