Hunt for Festival Special Trains
To manage the immense demand during festival periods like Diwali and Chhath Puja, Indian Railways operates hundreds of 'Festival Special' trains. These are temporary services added on high-traffic routes to increase capacity. These trains often have a 5-digit
number starting with '0' and are announced in phases. Keep a close eye on the IRCTC website, the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app, and railway zones' social media handles for announcements. Since these trains are added closer to the travel dates, seats can be available even when regular trains are fully booked. For the 2026 festival season, numerous special services have been announced connecting major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, and Varanasi.
Master the IRCTC Vikalp Scheme
The IRCTC's Vikalp scheme is a powerful tool for waitlisted passengers. When booking your ticket, you can opt into Vikalp, which allows Indian Railways to move you to a confirmed seat on an alternate train if one is available. This alternate train will be departing within 12 hours of your original train's scheduled departure. The service comes at no extra cost, but it does not guarantee a confirmed berth—it only increases your chances by checking for vacant seats across multiple trains on your route. A key point to remember is that you might be assigned a train from a nearby major station, not necessarily your original boarding point. Once you are allotted a seat in an alternate train, you cannot travel on your original train.
Use Technology to Your Advantage
Several third-party apps can give you a significant edge. Apps like ConfirmTkt and ixigo are authorised IRCTC partners that offer valuable features like waitlist prediction. Using historical data, these apps forecast the probability of your waitlisted ticket getting confirmed, helping you decide whether to wait or look for other options. Many of these platforms also have an 'alternates' feature that creatively combines trains, buses, or different boarding/dropping points to build a confirmed travel plan. For instance, it might suggest booking a ticket from a station further down the line where quotas are still available. Staying updated with these apps can make the difference between a waitlisted ticket and a confirmed journey.
Be Flexible with Your Plans
Rigidity is the enemy of festival travel. If you can, be flexible with your travel dates by a day or two. Mid-week or late-night departures are often less crowded than weekend trains. Also, expand your search to include boarding stations just outside your city or destination stations that are a short bus or taxi ride away from your final stop. Sometimes, seats are available from a different station's quota even when the main city's quota is exhausted. This small adjustment can often open up a surprising number of new, confirmed options. Trying different classes can also yield results; sleeper and 3AC classes fill up the fastest, while 2AC might sometimes have better availability for last-minute bookings.
Explore Alternatives Beyond the Rails
When trains are completely packed, it's time to look at other modes of transport. The network of private and state-run Volvo and sleeper buses has expanded significantly, offering a comfortable alternative for overnight journeys. While they can be crowded, they provide a reliable last-minute option. For longer distances, check for last-minute flight deals. While often more expensive, flying can sometimes be competitive with Premium Tatkal train fares, especially if booked strategically. Carpooling services are another growing option, connecting passengers with private car owners heading in the same direction, offering a cost-effective and social way to travel.
The Tatkal and Premium Tatkal Strategy
Tatkal booking, which opens one day before the journey (10 AM for AC classes, 11 AM for non-AC), should be treated as a last resort. Success requires speed and preparation. Use IRCTC's 'Master List' feature to save passenger details beforehand to save crucial seconds during booking. Ensure you have a high-speed internet connection and use a fast payment method like UPI or the IRCTC eWallet. If your budget allows and the journey is critical, Premium Tatkal is another option. The fares are dynamic and higher, but it offers another chance to secure a ticket when all other quotas are exhausted.
