The New Era of Flight Cancellations in India
Gone are the days of losing your entire airfare due to a last-minute change. Thanks to updated regulations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) effective from March 26, 2026, Indian travellers have more power. The most significant change is
the introduction of a 48-hour 'look-in' window. This allows you to cancel or amend your booking without any airline fee if done within 48 hours of purchase. However, this rule has conditions: for domestic flights, the departure must be at least seven days away, and for international flights, 15 days away. The rules also mandate quicker refunds, requiring airlines to process credit card refunds within seven days and those for tickets bought via agents within 14 working days. Furthermore, cancellation charges cannot exceed the sum of the basic fare and fuel surcharge.
Decoding Hotel and Accommodation Policies
Hotel cancellation rules can be a maze of different terms. Many hotels and booking platforms offer 'free cancellation' up to a certain date, typically 24 to 48 hours before check-in. This is a fantastic option for flexibility. On the other hand, 'non-refundable' bookings are cheaper but come with a significant risk—if you cancel, you lose the entire amount. Always weigh the savings against the potential loss. When booking, pay close attention to the fine print, especially during peak seasons, festivals, or long weekends when policies can be much stricter. Some hotels may have non-refundable periods for specific high-demand dates. If your plans are uncertain, opting for a flexible, refundable rate is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Booking directly with a hotel can sometimes offer more recourse than booking through a third-party site, though many aggregators also have clear cancellation procedures.
The Safety Net of Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a powerful tool for safeguarding your trip investment. A standard policy can reimburse you for non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel for a covered reason. These reasons typically include sudden illness or injury, a family emergency, or severe weather. It's crucial to read the policy to understand exactly what is and isn't covered. For ultimate flexibility, consider a 'Cancel For Any Reason' (CFAR) add-on. This premium option allows you to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever and get a significant portion of your non-refundable costs back, usually up to 75%. CFAR policies are time-sensitive and must typically be purchased within a few weeks of your initial trip payment. This can be particularly useful for trips booked far in advance or in uncertain situations.
Check Your Credit Card Benefits
Before you purchase separate insurance, check the benefits that come with your credit card. Many premium credit cards in India offer complimentary travel insurance, which often includes trip cancellation coverage. This benefit can reimburse you for non-refundable flight and hotel bookings if you cancel for a valid reason. To be eligible, you usually must have paid for the travel expenses with that specific card. Cards like the IDFC FIRST Bank series (Mayura, Ashva) and premium offerings from HDFC, SBI, and ICICI come with varying levels of travel protection. The coverage limits and terms differ, so it's essential to review your card's benefit guide to understand the extent of your protection before you rely on it.
Proactive Steps to Protect Your Money
Being proactive is the best strategy. Always read the cancellation policy before you click 'book'—it may seem tedious, but it can save you thousands. Use a calendar to set reminders for cancellation deadlines for hotels or tours with free cancellation windows. If you need to cancel, do it as soon as possible. For flights, cancelling within the 48-hour DGCA window is ideal. For hotels, adhering to their 24 or 48-hour notice period for refundable bookings is key. If you're outside the free cancellation window, don't just accept the loss. Call the airline or hotel directly. A polite conversation with a customer service agent can sometimes lead to a credit voucher or a reduced fee, especially if you have a genuine reason for the cancellation.
