This is not a visa-free travel policy, but rather a tourism campaign where the visa fee is paid for you.
Who Qualifies for the Indian Tourist Offer?
This promotional offer is quite specific and targeted. To be eligible, you must meet several criteria. Firstly, you must be an Indian passport holder departing from India for your trip. The core requirement is booking a holiday package that includes a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. This package must also include a return flight from India. Crucially, you cannot apply for this free visa independently; the booking must be made through a participating travel partner or online travel agency. The initiative is a pilot programme running from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is capped at 20,000 visas, so availability isn't guaranteed.
Understanding the Free 48-Hour Transit Visa
The 48-hour transit visa is designed for travellers with long layovers who want to leave the airport and explore the city. It is issued free of charge and allows you to stay in the UAE for up to 48 hours. To qualify, you must be flying through a UAE airport on your way to a third destination. For example, flying from Mumbai to London via Abu Dhabi. You cannot use it for a simple return trip to the UAE. The application must be made in advance through a UAE-based airline, which sponsors your application. This visa is single-entry and cannot be extended.
Who Is Not Eligible?
The headline's warning is important: many travellers will not qualify. The Indian tourist offer, for instance, is not for those staying in Dubai for their trip, even if they land in Abu Dhabi. The three-night hotel stay must be in Abu Dhabi itself. It also doesn't apply to people booking flights and hotels separately; it must be a package from a partner agency. For the transit visa, it is not for people whose final destination is the UAE. It’s also not needed if you plan to stay within the airport's transit area (airside) during your layover, regardless of its length. Furthermore, citizens of countries who are already eligible for visa-free entry or a visa on arrival do not need to apply for a transit visa.
How to Apply and Common Mistakes to Avoid
For the Indian tourist promotion, the process starts with finding a participating travel agency, like Akbar Travels, MakeMyTrip, or Thomas Cook India. You must explicitly confirm with them that the package you are booking is eligible for the complimentary visa. The agency will then handle the visa processing. You will need to provide a copy of your passport (valid for at least three to six months), a passport-style photo, and your confirmed onward ticket. A common mistake is assuming the visa is granted automatically with the flight booking; it is a separate application that requires about four business days for processing.
