A Festive Lifeline for Millions
Every year, the demand for train tickets from Mumbai skyrockets as millions of people head home to celebrate Diwali and Chhath Puja with their families. Regular train services are quickly overwhelmed, leading to long waiting lists and immense travel stress.
To provide some relief, Central Railway has rolled out a comprehensive plan involving 418 special train services. These trains are specifically designed to connect major hubs like Mumbai and Pune with destinations that see the highest passenger traffic during this period, particularly in North and South India. The goal is to add significant capacity to the network, offering more confirmed berths and ensuring smoother, more convenient travel for passengers during this peak holiday season.
Connecting Mumbai to India's Heartland
The special services will operate from key Mumbai stations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), as well as from nearby hubs like Pune and Hadapsar. The primary focus is on high-demand corridors. A significant number of services, including 64 daily trips, are scheduled between CSMT and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, a major route for migrant workers. Other key northern destinations receiving additional connectivity include Banaras, Mau, and Ghazipur. The festive timetable also strengthens connections to South India, with weekly AC special trains to Chennai and Bengaluru. Furthermore, services have been announced for Thiruvananthapuram, providing a crucial link for passengers travelling to Kerala. Within Maharashtra, special trains will also connect Mumbai to cities like Nagpur, Kolhapur, and Latur.
The All-Important Booking Window
Securing a ticket on one of these special trains requires planning and speed. Bookings for many of these services began on September 27 and 28, 2026. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and can be booked through all Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and online via the official IRCTC website and mobile app. Due to the high demand, tickets on popular routes are exhausted within minutes of the booking window opening. Travellers are advised to save passenger details and payment information on the IRCTC platform in advance to speed up the checkout process. It's also wise to be flexible with travel dates, as shifting your journey by a day or two might increase your chances of getting a confirmed ticket.
Know Your Train and Travel Smarter
These special trains consist of a mix of coach types, including AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, Sleeper Class, and general second-class coaches, to cater to different budgets and needs. However, many of these are fully reserved services, meaning you must have a confirmed or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket to board. Some services are designated as 'special trains on special charges,' which means the fares may be higher than on regular trains. Passengers are strongly advised to check the train type, schedule, and any special conditions before booking. For real-time information on train running status and platform numbers, it is best to consult the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app before and during your journey.
Tips for Navigating the Rush
Even with hundreds of extra trains, railway stations will be exceptionally crowded. The key to a less stressful journey is preparation. Arrive at the station well in advance of your train’s departure time to navigate the crowds and find your platform without rushing. Pack as light as possible to make moving through packed stations and train compartments easier. Always travel with a valid ticket and a government-issued ID. Be vigilant about your belongings, as crowded environments can be a target for theft. Finally, confirm your train's departure platform from the official displays at the station, as last-minute changes are possible during the festive season.
