Exercising in high humidity is uniquely challenging because it short-circuits your body's primary cooling system. Normally, you sweat, and as that sweat evaporates, it pulls heat away from your skin. But when the air is already saturated with moisture—as
it is during the monsoon—evaporation slows dramatically. Your body continues to produce sweat, but it can't cool you down effectively. This trapped heat forces your system to work overtime. Your heart rate increases as your body pumps more blood to the skin's surface in an attempt to radiate heat away. This dual demand of powering your muscles and trying to cool down puts significant strain on your cardiovascular system, making any given pace feel much harder than it would in dry conditions. This is why even a routine workout can leave you feeling unusually fatigued and why pushing through can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion.
Adjust Your Pace, Not Your Goals
Trying to maintain your usual pace during humid monsoon days is a recipe for burnout or injury. The key is to shift your focus from speed to effort. Your Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)—how hard the workout feels to you—is a more reliable guide than your GPS watch when humidity is high. A pace that feels easy on a cool, dry day might feel like a hard effort during the monsoon, and that's a signal to slow down. Coaches suggest that for every few degrees the temperature rises above 15°C, especially with high humidity, you should expect to slow your pace by several seconds per kilometre to maintain the same effort level. For many, this means embracing slower runs, reducing the intensity of high-impact workouts, or even swapping a run for a session on a treadmill in a climate-controlled room. This isn't a sign of lost fitness; it's a smart adaptation that allows your body to continue training safely and consistently.
Rethink Your Hydration Strategy
During the monsoon, you might not feel as thirsty due to cooler temperatures, but your body is losing significant fluids and essential minerals through sweat. In humid conditions, this sweat doesn't provide much cooling, but you're still losing water and electrolytes like sodium and potassium, which are vital for muscle function and fluid balance. It's crucial to hydrate proactively. Start drinking water well before your workout, and continue sipping regularly throughout. For workouts lasting over an hour, plain water might not be enough. Consider an electrolyte drink or natural alternatives like coconut water to replenish what you've lost. After your workout, continue to rehydrate to aid recovery. One practical tip is to weigh yourself before and after a workout; for every pound lost, aim to drink around 500-700 ml of fluid to properly rehydrate.
Prioritise Post-Workout Recovery
Because exercising in humidity is more taxing, recovery becomes even more important. A proper cool-down is the first step. Instead of stopping abruptly, gradually slow your pace for 5-10 minutes to allow your heart rate to return to normal. This is also the ideal time for gentle stretching, as your muscles are warm and pliable. Nutrition plays a key role in repairing your body. Aim for a snack or meal containing both carbohydrates and protein within an hour of finishing your workout to replenish energy stores and help muscle repair. Finally, don't underestimate the power of sleep. Quality rest is when your body does most of its repair work, making it essential for recovering from the added stress of a humid workout and preparing you for the next one.
