For decades, booking a train ticket online, especially for Tatkal or popular routes, felt like a lottery. The previous Passenger Reservation System (PRS), while a workhorse, was buckling under the pressure of modern digital demand. Developed by the Centre
for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the system could handle approximately 32,000 bookings per minute. While impressive, this was often no match for the millions of users logging in simultaneously, leading to website crashes, payment failures, and the dreaded spinning wheel of uncertainty. This was particularly acute during the morning Tatkal window, where entire quotas would vanish in seconds, leaving many frustrated. The old system, first deployed in 2010 on now-dated technology, simply wasn't built for an India where nearly 89% of reserved tickets are booked online.
A Quantum Leap in Capacity
The new-generation PRS represents a monumental upgrade. Indian Railways has begun a phased rollout of a new cloud-based platform designed to handle a staggering 1.5 lakh bookings per minute—nearly five times the previous capacity. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a complete overhaul of the core infrastructure that has managed railway reservations for nearly 40 years. The project, managed by CRIS, moves the system to a more scalable and resilient cloud-enabled architecture. This means the system can dynamically manage the massive surges in traffic that were previously its undoing. The goal is to make the platform more efficient, transparent, and accessible for the over 20.5 lakh passengers who book reserved tickets daily.
More Than Just Booking Speed
The upgrade extends far beyond the headline booking number. The capacity for handling passenger enquiries—like checking PNR status, seat availability, or waitlist positions—is also seeing a tenfold increase. The new system is built to process over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, up from the current 4 lakh. This enhancement is crucial for reducing the overall load on the system, as countless users refresh enquiry pages while trying to make a booking decision. Furthermore, the new platform will feature a multilingual, user-friendly interface, making it more accessible to a wider demographic of travellers across India. A redesigned IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026, is part of this transition, already showing marginal improvements in the speed of Tatkal bookings.
