Why the Timetable Revision?
According to Northern Railway, the decision to advance the departure times for two Vande Bharat trains from Varanasi was made for operational reasons. While a ten-minute change might seem minor, it can have a significant impact on railway network efficiency.
Such adjustments are often implemented to improve the overall punctuality of train services, de-congest busy routes, and streamline the movement of multiple trains sharing the same tracks. For passengers, this seemingly small tweak is critical; arriving at the station based on the old schedule could mean missing the train entirely. The change specifically affects the departure from Varanasi, with schedules for all subsequent stations on both routes remaining unchanged.
New Timing: Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express
The first train affected is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888). Starting September 2, this train will now depart from Varanasi Junction at 3:55 PM (15:55 hrs) instead of its previous time of 4:05 PM (16:05 hrs). This service, which was flagged off in March 2024, is a key link between Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. It runs six days a week, excluding Tuesdays, and covers the 536-kilometre distance in approximately 7 hours and 50 minutes. The train stops at several important stations, including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Gaya, Koderma, and Bokaro Steel City, before terminating in Ranchi.
New Timing: Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express
The second service with a revised schedule is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). Passengers travelling on this morning train will also need to adjust their plans. Effective September 2, the train will depart from Varanasi at 6:10 AM (06:10 hrs), ten minutes earlier than its previous departure time of 6:20 AM (06:20 hrs). This train is a vital service for pilgrims and tourists heading to the temple town of Deoghar in Jharkhand, famous for the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple. The timings at all stations after Varanasi will not be affected by this change.
What This Means for Passengers
The key takeaway for passengers is simple: arrive at Varanasi station earlier. Anyone accustomed to the old timings needs to be aware of the new, earlier departures to avoid any last-minute hassles. The 10-minute adjustment for the morning train to Deoghar means re-planning the start of your day, while the afternoon departure for Ranchi now requires being at the platform before 4 PM. Indian Railways has advised all travellers to check the updated schedule before heading to the station. This change highlights the importance of verifying train timings, especially for premium services like the Vande Bharat Express, which are known for their punctuality and high demand. A quick check can ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your journey.
