Anyone who has tried to sleep on an overnight train in India knows the struggle. The new Vande Bharat sleeper aims to fix common AC 3-tier complaints, but its approach to the persistent problem of noise is more subtle than you might think.
The Familiar Symphony of Discomfort
For decades,
the AC 3-tier coach has been the workhorse of long-distance travel for millions of Indians. While offering the comfort of air conditioning at an accessible price point, it comes with a well-known list of grievances. Topping that list is noise and constant disturbance. Passengers, especially those with berths near the coach entrance, often face a sleepless night due to the clatter of doors, the chatter of people in the vestibule, and the general movement of passengers and vendors. These disturbances, combined with the inherent vibrations and sounds of the train itself, create an environment where restful sleep can be elusive. Overcrowding and unauthorised passengers can further degrade the experience, turning a paid-for comfort into a general-compartment ordeal.
A Smart Solution at the Doorway
The designers of the Vande Bharat sleeper have taken direct aim at one of the biggest sources of this disturbance. In a simple but effective layout change, the new coaches feature an automatic sliding door that separates the main passenger corridor from the vestibule and entrance area. A notable amount of empty space has been created between the coach gate and the first set of berths. This acts as a buffer zone, physically and audibly insulating sleeping passengers from the noise and activity concentrated at the coach entrances. While a seemingly small tweak, this thoughtful design directly addresses the long-standing complaint about the undesirable 'gate-side' berths, promising a more peaceful journey for those who occupy them.
Targeting Noise Without Promising Silence
Beyond the clever door placement, the Vande Bharat sleeper incorporates several engineering features aimed at creating a quieter cabin. The trainsets are self-propelled electric multiple units (EMUs), which eliminates the noise and jerks associated with a separate locomotive. The coaches feature better sound insulation, improved suspension systems to dampen vibrations, and fully sealed gangways that reduce external noise and help maintain a consistent internal environment. However, despite these noise-reduction measures, neither Indian Railways nor the manufacturer, BEML, has made specific claims about decibel level reductions. This cautious approach acknowledges that while the design is intended to be quieter, the true test will be the real-world passenger experience. The goal is a smoother, less jarring ride, but they are stopping short of promising outright silence.
A Broader Upgrade in Passenger Comfort
The focus on a better journey extends far beyond noise. The Vande Bharat sleeper represents a significant upgrade across the board compared to its predecessors. Berths are designed to be more ergonomic, with better cushioning. The ladders for climbing to upper berths have been improved for ease of use, a common pain point in older coaches. Lighting is also more advanced, with sensor-based lights in common areas and subtle floor strips for better visibility at night. The train also features aircraft-style bio-vacuum toilets designed to be odourless, spacious luggage racks, and USB charging ports for every passenger. First AC passengers even get the luxury of a hot water shower.
The Road Ahead for Sleeper Travel
The first Vande Bharat sleeper prototype, manufactured by a BEML–ICF consortium, was rolled out in September 2024. Following successful trials, the first services began operating in early 2026, with a Mumbai–Bengaluru route launched on November 1, 2026. While these new trains come at a significantly higher fare—up to 60–90% more for an AC 3–tier ticket compared to other trains on the same route—they also cut down travel time considerably. Other manufacturing consortiums are also in the process of building their own prototypes, with rollouts expected in the near future. This new generation of sleeper trains marks a clear shift towards a more premium, comfortable, and faster overnight travel experience on Indian Railways.
