Why Operations Were Limited
Safari operations in both Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves were suspended in November 2025 following an increase in human-animal conflicts in villages bordering the parks. In February 2026, services resumed partially, with fewer vehicles and reduced
hours, while a technical committee assessed the situation. This prolonged period of limited access had a significant economic impact on the region, which relies heavily on eco-tourism. Following the committee's report, the Karnataka government has now approved the full restoration of safaris, balancing conservation needs with community livelihoods.
The Monsoon Experience
The reopening coincides with the monsoon season, which completely transforms the parks. The dry, dusty landscapes of summer give way to a blanket of lush, vibrant green, and water bodies are replenished. While the dense foliage can make spotting tigers and leopards more challenging, the monsoon offers its own unique magic. The forests are atmospheric, crowds are often smaller, and it's an excellent time for birdwatching. Large herds of Asiatic elephants are also a common and magnificent sight during the rains.
Planning Your Bandipur Safari
Bandipur National Park, a cornerstone of Project Tiger, is located on the highway connecting Mysuru and Ooty. Safaris are conducted by the Karnataka Forest Department, typically in the morning (around 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM) and evening (3:00 PM to 6:00 PM). You can choose between a larger canter or a smaller jeep safari. It is highly recommended to book your safari in advance, especially for weekends, through the official forest department website to secure a spot. Be prepared for the specific challenges of a monsoon trip; tracks can be muddy and leeches are common, so waterproof boots are a must.
Exploring Nagarahole and Kabini
Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, often known by its popular tourist hub, Kabini, is contiguous with Bandipur but offers a distinct experience. The Kabini River, which separates the two parks, is a major feature. Boat safaris on the Kabini reservoir are a highlight here and can be particularly rewarding during monsoon, as animals congregate near the water's edge. Like Bandipur, Nagarahole offers morning and evening vehicle safaris, which can be booked online via the official portal. The area is renowned for its high density of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, and wild dogs (dholes).
Tips for a Successful Trip
To make the most of your visit, online booking is the most reliable way to secure permits. With the full reopening, demand for July weekends is already surging. Remember that major highways running through the forests, like NH-766 through Bandipur, have strict night traffic bans (typically 9 PM to 6 AM), so plan your travel from cities like Bengaluru accordingly to avoid missing a morning safari. Pack waterproof clothing, insect repellent, and wear earth-toned clothes to blend in with the surroundings. Always carry a valid photo ID for every traveller, as it's required for booking and entry.
